Jan Zak, 80, died Saturday June 14, 2008 at Candler Hospital. Mr. Zak was a native of Czechoslovakia and had lived in Savannah since 1969. He received his master's degree from Armstrong Atlantic State University and worked as an x ray technician at St. Joseph's Hospital. He is survived by his daughter Helena of Tampa, Florida. She was the daughter of Thomas and Katherine Cocreham. Jan was an art major at Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. When World War II broke out and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she became a Red Cross volunteer nurses aide, assisting patients in local hospitals and rolling bandages for wounded veterans overseas.
