Born October 9, 1910 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Giovanni and Domenica Mori Garbi of Sesta Superiore, Parma, Italy, and reportedly Savannah's oldest living Italian. After attending Walton High School, she worked as a legal secretary for several years, prior to starting a family.
