He retired from Union Camp Corporation in 1998 after 31 years as an industrial engineer in the Bag and Corporate divisions. He was a 1962 graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Savannah Golf Club and former member of the Bacon Park Senior Blitz.
