She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, daughter of the late Edward Castle and Mary Bartlett Griffith. She was educated in Tampa, Florida and Altamont, New York Schools. She worked for Todd Shipbuilders in Tampa during World War II. She married Charles W. Bleichner in 1946 in Scotia, New York.
