Ken was born in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to Burley Paul and Atha (Odom) Sanders on June 27, 1946, and moved at the age of 18 months to Varnville. He graduated from Estill High School in 1965 and attended North Greenville Junior College (now University) where he majored in piano and organ.
