He was an active veteran and past president of the Chatham Artillery. He served overseas in World War II and was one of the few Army men to have invaded Iwo Jima with the Marine Corps. His unit was the first Ground Approach unit in the Air Corps when the unit asked to direct a B-29 that was lost about 70 miles from Iwo Jima.
