She was born September 11, 1924, in Soperton, Georgia, to Jonah L., Sr. and Sapola Brinson Riner. She grew up in Vidalia and moved to Savannah in 1945 with her husband, Joe Troy Halligan. Fondly called Mamma, Lady, Aunt Nita, and Nana, she was a homemaker and Christian servant.
