Celebrating the life of

Walton Douglas Carroll, Jr.

Passed away on February 15, 2022

Walton Douglas Carroll, Jr.

Walton Douglas Carroll, Jr., of Savannah, GA and formally of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on February 15, 2022 after a short battle with cancer. He was in the loving arms of his wife and children in his final moments. He was born to Walton Douglas “Doug” Carroll, Sr. and Leila Margaret Dreher on June 30, 1946.

He attended A.C. Flora High School, Class of 1964, and graduated from the University of South Carolina. Prior to graduation, Walton joined the Navy and served our country during the Vietnam War. He and Jerolyn were married at Shandon United Methodist Church on a Wednesday evening in 1969 and left immediately for his duty post at Whidbey Island, Washington. It was those Navy years that began and strengthened their beautiful marriage of fifty-two years.

After graduating from college, he started his long career with the Internal Revenue Service and served as the manager of the southeast Georgia office until his retirement.

Walton, or Walt as friends called him, was the epitome of a Christian, family man. He was reared in a loving home with strong values which he passed to his children and grandchildren.  He is survived by wife, Jerolyn Bruce Long Carroll, also formally of Columbia, SC and a daughter, Emily Christine Carroll Holzman, Emily’s husband Martin Walter Holzman, and their two sons John Walter and Raleigh William Holzman of McDonough, GA; his son, Walton Douglas Carroll III, Doug’s wife Virginia “Ginna” Ann Ewaldsen Carroll and two granddaughters, Mary Margaret and Virginia Corinne Carroll of Savannah, GA. He is also survived by his younger sister, Frances Virginia Carroll Coleman and her husband, Curtis Everett Coleman, Jr.; brother-in-law Jerry Franklin Wilkinson of Albany, NY. and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Margaret “Peggy” Dreher Carroll Wilkinson.

Walton cherished time spent with his four grandchildren and always tried to show them his love of nature, plants, and God’s garden creatures.  Daily gardening, propagating and sharing his plants was a true passion and brought much joy to Walton’s life. He was especially proud of his new camellia bed!  Walton was quite the gourmet chef and enjoyed feeding his family and friends. As an avid sports fan and college football enthusiast, he cheered on his Gamecocks through their ups and downs. Walton was a member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully on various committees.

A Memorial Service will be held at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church on Calhoun Square on Friday, February 18, 2022 at 3:00 PM, with a visitation preceding the service at the church at 2:00 PM. Remembrances, if desired, would be appreciated for Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn St, Savannah, GA 31401.

I am so sorry to learn of his passing, but am glad he is released from his suffering. Savannah is lucky he made his home here. I only met him once, 35 years ago, at the IRS. The issue was a change in the federal fuel tax license requirements, which had a huge impact on my employer. Our CPA and I met with Mr. Carrol to find a resolution to the problem that change made. He was professional, courteous, and respectful, not bureaucratic or hard to get along with. We came up with a solution, I implemented it, and we all walked out satisfied. I greatly appreciated that, and never forgot it. May he rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Walt was a manager in my Branch when I first arrived in the Atlanta District. He was one that was easy to work with and was always enthusiastic about doing the best work possible; therefore, a pleasure to work wiht. He always had a smile and a great sense of humor. All who knew him will greatly miss him but as a christian we all know “who holds tomorrow!” Rest in peace Walt!

We were so saddened to hear of Walt’s passing. As happens on the islands, our lives touched and wove through the years. It is difficult when such a positive and bright life leaves us, but we hope the love of family surrounding you and fond memories will be a comfort in the weeks to come.
