Harry Devotie Downs

Savannah - Harry Devotie Downs, age 81 of Savannah, Georgia went to be with our Lord, Sunday June 24, 2007. He was born in Savannah, Georgia to Mamie Malone Downs and Harry D. Downs, Sr. Retired Senior Master Sergeant Downs started his career in 1942 with the 3rd Air Force Staging Wing, U.S. Army Air Force, 93rd Sub-Depot, Hunter Army Airfield. He was honorably discharged from the 165th Military Airlift Group, Georgia Air National Guard, in 1983 and was retired August 31, 1985 from the United States Air Force Reserve and in addition to previous awards, was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was a previous member of the Air National Guard SAFANG and a member of the Bill Summerell-Andy Swain Gray Eagle Society. He was a member of Isle of Hope Methodist Church. He was the first certified United States Scuba Diving instructor in the state of Georgia. He loved music and playing the piano. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Christine P. Downs, and granddaughter Kimberly Michele Downs.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Vick Downs of Savannah, son and daughter-in-law Harry Sanders and Cecilia A. Downs of Tybee Island, GA, Thomas Michael Downs of Savannah, daughters and sons-in-law, Carolynn Linda and Howard Gary Robbins of Collierville, TN, Sharon Lee and Mark Anthony DeRigo of Richmond, VA, Harriett Christine and Charles Randy Matzen of Savannah, and cousin Betty Malone Miller of Savannah. Grandchildren: Suzanne and Dr. Joe Blumer of Charleston, SC, Kristopher Gary and Gerri Ann Robbins of Macon, GA, Charles Tyler Matzen and Randi Christine Elizabeth Matzen of Savannah, Scott Michael Downs of Wilmington, NC, Nicholas Joshua Downs of Tybee Island, GA, Ryan and Jeannie Longwater of Tybee Island, GA. Great-grandchildren: Caroline Elizabeth and Annalise Carter Blumer of Charleston, SC, Andrew Ryan and Megan Nicole Longwater of Tybee Island, GA. Stepchildren: Cindy and David Gallahan of Valdosta, and Ralph and Linda Vick of Savannah, GA. Step-grandchildren: Chad Gallahan of Valdosta, and Kelly and Steven Vick, of Savannah.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home on Hodgson Memorial Drive.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
A reception will be held at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church immediately following the Graveside service.
Remembrances: Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum or Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
