William L. Bell

William L. Bell, 83, died August 9, 2007 at Hospice Savannah after a lengthy illness. Mr. Bell was well known in the educational community of Savannah and surrounding areas, having retired as president of Hancock Day School in 2004. He had assisted his mother, Mrs. Emmie Ruth Bell Hancock, in
the operation of Hancock Day School since 1960, as well as Hancock Academy from 1972 to 1979. At the beginning of his association with Hancock Day School
he met, and soon married, Doris Cone Brown, a member of the Hancock Day School faculty, and who became an essential and beloved part of the school. Prior
to his affiliation with Hancock Day School he taught in Rincon, Georgia and was coach of the girls’ basketball team. He also coached boys’ basketball teams at Armstrong Junior College and Abraham Baldwin Junior College.
Mr. Bell was born May 7, 1924 to Emmie Ruth and Jack Bell in Irwinton, Georgia. He grew up and attended school in Gordon, Georgia, graduating from
Gordon High School. He attended Armstrong Junior College and Georgia Teachers’ College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree. He received a Master’s
Degree from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mr. Bell served his country in the Army during World War II. He was an active charter member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, which was founded in a classroom at Hancock Day School. He also held membership in the Kiwanis Club of Savannah, LaVida Country Club, the Y’s Men’s Club, and the alumni
associations of Georgia Teachers’ College, Georgia Southern and Armstrong College.
Mr. Bell was predeceased by his brother, Jack Bell, as well as his mother and father.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Doris Bell, and his nephews Ross Bell Susan, Gerry Bell Diane, Gary Bell, five great-nieces, three great-nephews, and two great, great-nephews.
Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral: 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2007 at Cokesbury United Methodist Church with The Reverend Enoch Hendry, officiating.
Burial: Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
