Thomas J. Ennis, 85, of Savannah, passed away on September 15, 2009. He was born on May 3, 1924, in Pooler, Georgia.
Mr. Ennis served his country during World War II in the US Navy, as a crewmember of the USS Edward C. Daly, a destroyer escort ship. He was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and enjoyed attending many Navy reunions before his health declined. He developed many deep relationships with his shipmates during this time. Following his Navy career, he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and established himself in a 40 year career in the sheet metal/sign business.
Tommy was an active member of the Windsor Forest Baptist Church and the Beverly Sunday School Class. He had a passion for life and loved his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Beatrice Ennis and his wife of 28 years, Eleanor.
He is survived by his wife, Winnie Huncke Ennis; brothers, Dick Patricia Ennis and Bob Ann Ennis of Pooler; sister, Ruby Woog of Oxford, Georgia; two stepsons, Eddie Sandy Huncke and Bobby Fran Huncke, all of Savannah; one stepdaughter, Diane Dick Mahaffey of Gainesville, Florida. In addition, he leaves four step-grandchildren, Tara Travis Dunsmore of Tampa, Florida, Traci Mahaffey of Winter Park, Florida, Rachel Huncke and Thomas Huncke, both of Savannah, along with two step-great-grandchildren, Jack and Will Dunsmore of Tampa, Florida. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law include, Pete Loretta Lancaster, Tommy Carolyn Lancaster, Lemuel Judy Lancaster, Judy Triplett, Newel Kessler and Elsie Lancaster.
The family would like to express its appreciation and special thanks for the sincere care and love shown from Dr.s Lebos and Haberman, as well as the staff at Summit Cancer Care and Hospice of Savannah.
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Ennis will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with burial following at the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to Hospice of Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, Georgia 31416.
