I met Virgil in the early eighties. I had the privilege to fly with Virgil on several occasions and learned a lot from him about Gulfstreams. Virgil was one of the “good guys” in every respect. In the summer of 2008 I had a nice visit with Virgil over lunch. I very much enjoyed knowing Virgil.

My prayers are with you Salli and Jennifer at this difficult time. Virgil was an icon of the corporate aviation industry. He was instrumental in ensuring safe flight operations through his interactions with innumeral aircraft crewmembers. He will be deeply missed.

- Louisa Fisher, ,

What sad news. Virgil and I flew quite a few hours together during the Cougar certification in the late 1970's. I was the Narco Avionics rep and of course Virgil was the pilot. It didn't take long to know you were flying with a pro, and he is still that one pilot that I'd go with anytime in anything he felt was safe. He will be missed.

- John Praytor, Sahuarita, AZ

My deepest sympathy to Virgil's family. Virgil was one of my favorite pilots to land in Anchorage, Alaska. We became aviation friends and I was always excited to see his name on a trip sheet. Even after he retired, he never really retired! He has been a great mentor for my aviation career and even after I left Alaska, when our paths would cross at NBAA functions, he always made time chat and give me a big bear hug. A true Southern gentleman. He touched my life and so many lives all over the world. I am so thankful to have known him. God Bless you Virgil, you will be missed but not forgotten.

- Kristin Kirschbaum, Houston, TX

Virgil was a great friend and mentor. Some of my fondest memories will always be of our dinners together on those wonderful Monday nights at the Savannah Quarterback Club. Somehow Virgil beat me on just about every card! I will never forget when Coach Richt came down to talk with my Dad and we were all crying. Thanks Virgil for your friendship. I was honored and priveleged to have known this very special gentleman. God bless Virgil and his family.

- Muddy Watters, Birmingham, AL

I was a young man working on the light aircrsft flight line in substandard conditions. We worked in cold uninsulated T Hangars in the dead of winter trying to and did do superior work to provide the best aircraft . There were many times it was difficult to explain to others our love and ambitions of what we did to provide an aircraft for flight. But as we prepared them under any conditions Virgil was the guy that was always by our side to show his faith in us the faithful few of the GA7 flight line, if we said it would fly Virgil would fly it. Virgil was a man's man from the begining to the end. You will be greatly missed. Eric A Welch

- Eric A Welch, Wallkill, NY

What a good friend Virgil has been to me all the years since we met in 1981. I was new to Gulfstream, and he checked me out in a Tiger that was for sale. It took no time at all to figure out we were birds of a feather, as we ended the flight by flying up the Savannah River at low altitude, grinning from wingtip to wingtip. I'll miss you Virg! Tailwinds, buddy...

- Van Swofford, Brentwood, TN

We were so very sorry to hear of your loss. Your family will be in our prayers. Glenn & Jane old Barksdale Dr. neighbors

- Glenn & Jane Parker, , GA

Virgil - You were always the Southern Gentlemen. When we took delivery of our G3, you were on our Paris trip, and you shopped with the best of us, asking all the French people if they gave discount to crew members. And many times, you got it! You were always smiling, and I will not forget your handlebar mustache. It was a pleasure and honor to know you. Blue skies forever.

- LORRAINE A. VISOVSKY, Hillsdale, NJ

Virgil had the very difficult position of night supervisor for Grumman American's light aircraft flight line in 1977. We were working 7 days a week around the clock and Virgil was always there keeping tabs on the progress of a huge crew of young mechanics getting the aircraft ready for delivery. It was a tough job which he did with class. So much so that when we finished up there was a celebration late one night where a beer truck was driven to the front gate of the now Gulfstream facility for us to enjoy. Virgil, to his great dismay, was hoisted manually by his crew to the roof of the truck where he sat like a king surveying his knights. This is the image I still have of Virgil, a happy guy on top of the world! I will miss him.

- Jon Stark, shelburne falls, MA

One of my former test pilot friends just called to tell me of Virgil's passing. I am so sorry to hear of this. Poor Virgil had to deal with Goldie Glenn or someone else in the upper management of Grumman American sending him a barely 20 year old female of the species who was determined to be a production test pilot. It was with good grace and I'm sure some humor that he accepted me into the fold of pilots who made up the light aircraft flight test crew. I held up my end of the deal, but I'm sure if Virgil had put his foot down, my career would have never materialized. So, thank you, Virgil, for allowing me to work with you and Les, Sam, and Dennis. It was an invaluable training ground, and was without a doubt a big part on my getting hired at American Airlines years later. You are missed by many, many individuals... blue side up, tailwinds and all the other good stuff! Amy Heimann

- Amy Heimann, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

As my career kicked off at Gulfstream, I had the luck of being on a long term assignment with Virgil. He mentored and guided me through the maze of pit falls we find on the road... From Crested Butte to the Great Wall, he always had a smile and a good word or advise to ease the way. Virgil grabbed life by hair and touched many of us with his gentlemanly encouragement and sharp wit. I will smile every time I think of Virgil as these were some of my most fond memories. I salute you Virgil.

- Joe Watson, Brooklet, GA

I am the yougest of the first cousins, there was a 30 year age difference between Virgil and myself. My memories of him coming to Savonburg to visit were great. He always had a suit jacket on and perfect hair. He also always had great hugs to give me. I will miss him and wished that we could have had more visits.

- Victoria Malcor Johnson, Dodge City, KS

- Ken Howell, Middletown, DE

I was so sorry to hear of Virgil's passing. He was a great friend, and I always enjoyed his company. On my way to Miami I would stop in Savannah and we'd have supper and reminisce - we made many trips to Latin America together when we were with Gulfstream and I especially remember his 'time out' hand signal to all of us when we got stressed out. He was a great pilot and I always felt safe and secure when he was in the cockpit. My sincere condolences to the Wolfe family - we have all lost a great guy. Best regards, Doug Potter

- Doug Potter, stuart, VA

- Ed Fitch, Boiling Springs, SC

Although many an aircraft salesman would gladly take full credit for a sale - it was my experience that no sale was possible unless and until a professionally flown flight demonstration convinced the buying principal to place an order. Virgil was one pilot who contributed mightily to many such flight demonstration efforts that resulted in sales for Gulfstream. His easy going demeanor and professionalism made it a pleasure to be on his team. Virgil was one of the original good guys and we remember him fondly. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Wolfe family and to those who cherish his memory.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Virgil, one of the finest aviators I have ever known....and, more importantly, one of the finest human beings and one of the best friends I have known in my own career and lifetime. Virgil was a positive and supportive friend who always found the best in every situation; he left everyone and every circumstance better for having touched them - no memory could be better. I will dearly miss his friendship and presence in my life, but I will live every day being thankful that Virgil came into my life in the first place.

Virgil was a very close and dear friend. I would not be where I am in my career had it not have been for Virgil Wolfe. He was my mentor, but more importantly, my friend. - Tom Carfrey, Savannah, GA

Virgil was one of the first individuals I met in Savannah back in the 80s when I first started flying Gulfstreams. His knowledge and willingness to share that knowledge with everyone was but one of the wonderful traits he had. His kindness toward me during those early days of flying Gulfstreams helped me immensely. He was a true aviator and anyone who knew him could not help but befriend him. The world will be a lesser place without him. My heart goes out to his family.

- Bill Quinn, Isle of Palms, SC

- Tom Owens, Savannah, GA

An old friend greatly missed my condolences to sally and family

- Malcolm Whatley, , GA

It is always sad to hear that one of our own has departed the pattern and returned to home base. I always enjoyed being in the cockpit with Virge during production and outfitting test flights. He was a dedicated, professional pilot. He always had the time to spend with you whether you were a customer or one of the guys in flight ops. He was a home spun country boy who always had a smile and a good word for everyone. I remember a customer affectionately remarking one day as Virgil walked by... ' there goes a real pilot, a crop duster.' Virge could fly anything. The aviation world will miss Virgil. Condoleneces to Sallie and the family.

- Bill Hodde, San Antonio, TX

will remember you forever

- tom hodgson, spring grove, IL

I consider myself very lucky to have worked closely with Virgil during his time as our Chief Test Pilot at Stage III Technologies. Beyond his professionalism and precision as a pilot, his infectious personality always shone through whether he was dealing with engineers, executives, investors, potential customers or heaven forbid me as a salesperson. His store of knowledge was immense and impressive. However, even more impressive was his generosity in sharing that knowledge with anyone who asked. His ability to answer the simplest questions or explain the most complex theories at the proper level for a particular audience without making them feel ashamed for asking or walking away overwhelmed is a particular skill that I strive to emulate. There are numerous superlatives that could properly describe Virgil; but, to me, he will always be quite simply - special. I know I am a better person for my time spent with him, and I have no doubt he will be sorely missed.

- Chris Hicks, Plano, TX

My fondest memory of Virgil was the movies he sent to Grandmas when he was in the service. He will be missed.

Our warmest aloha goes out to the Family. Know that he will be truly missed by his friends from Hawaii. Aloha, Virgil!

- Suzanne Olaso, Honolulu, HI

Virgil and I were high school mates and friends and as I write this today, the tears in my eyes from my great loss is from the admiration and love that I had of him. He grew up on a farm about 2 miles east of a little Rural town in southeast Kansas. Elsmore Kansas at that time had a population of about 150 if I remember correctly. Our High School class had only 12 members in it. I remember him and his family were great people. His dad had a truck and during the summer, Virg and I would haul hay in from the field to the barn for other farmers. Many nights we would do this by the moon light. I wish that I could have spent more time with him. My heart felt condolences goes out to all who are suffering from this great loss. May God shine his light upon you. I will always miss you my friend.

- Royce Stevens, Ft. Myers, FL

To all the immediate family, I was just young when Virgil was in the army but I have some great memories of him when he would be home on leave. We would all be down at Grandma and Grandpa Wolfes house with all the Aunts and Uncles and cousins just having a blast and it would get to that time that Virgil would have to leave and I would get so upset that Virgil had to go so he would pick me up and act like he was putting me in his trunk to take me with him. I don't know why that stands out in my mind so well but it does. He was a very special person and will be greatly missed. But on the other hand just think hes up there reminiscing with his dad grandparents and uncles and aunts. Virgil tell your Uncle Donald we miss him. You will be greatly missed Pam

- Pam Petrie Wolfe Uncle Donalds Daughter, McLouth, KS

I remember some of the good old days. I will miss you. I know that we lived in the same state for many years I regret that I didn't visit you more often. May you rest in peace.

- Mike Wolfe, Lawrenceville, GA

One of the first people I met at American Aviation in Cleveland, Ohio in the early 70's was Virgil Wolf. He had a lot of responsibilities in those days but he was never too busy even for a 'new guy' like me. By the time we got to Savannah we were actually working together with the flight test group. I even have a great Super 8 film of the two of us in a GA7 Cougar flying around Tybee Island, doing rolls and other various stunts for my little camera. In all probability Virgil and George Crawford saved my sorry butt with Gulfstream at least twice when I really needed some help. I can still hear that sweet, 'country western' sort of voice he had. I've always said I'd rather fly with him than anyone else I ever met. He'll be missed by everyone who ever knew him. God Bless you good friend.

- Bill Schillinger, Manassas, VA

Virgil was a bit older than most of us cousins. I remember he came to visit us in KCK when he was on leave from the Army. We thought he was the greatest. I hadn't seen him for a while, but always got an update from Mike or Aunt Vi. We will miss him, but he is with the rest of the familly that has gone before him. I'm sure they were all there to meet him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Susie and Cheryl and the rest of the family.

- Cathy Wolf, Kansas City, KS

Glenn & Jane old Barksdale Dr. neighbors

I was so sorry to hear of Virgil's passing. He was a great friend, and I always enjoyed his company. On my way to Miami I would stop in Savannah and we'd have supper and reminisce - we made many trips to Latin America together when we were with Gulfstream and I especially remember his 'time out' hand signal to all of us when we got stressed out. He was a great pilot and I always felt safe and secure when he was in the cockpit. My sincere condolences to the Wolfe family - we have all lost a great guy. Best regards, Doug Potter

I have had the opportunity to utilize Virgil's teaching philosophy in the G550, G450, and now the G650. Virgil will be remembered in our hearts. I miss his already.

Virgil will be missed by so many. A true aviator known around the world. A true gentleman and wonderful person will always be in my memory. May God Bless Virgil and his Family

Dear Salli and Jennifer: We truly loved Virgil, his beautiful spirit and smile and that wonderful heartfelt laughter. He was quite a great gentleman with a very genuine nature that everyone loved. May the good Lord blees you with His grace and comfort during this difficult time and try and remember that we will see Virgil again in the next life. Proverbs 3:4-5 'Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.' With Deepest Sympathy..
