Irvin J. Sapp

SAVANNAH - Irvin James Sapp, Sr., 86, died Friday, December 10, 2010 at his residence with his family at his side. He was born on May 17 1924 in Wayne County, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Anna B. Sapp, of Madray Springs, GA, and one brother, John E. Sapp, of Marietta, GA.
A Navy veteran of World War II he was wounded at Tarawa. He was a graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN. and was a past President of the Academy of Graduate Embalmers from 1981-1982. He was also a member of the Lions Eye Bank and was an eye enucleationist from the beginning of the program. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church where he served on the board of Deacons, taught Sunday School and served on the board of Ushers.
He began his career as a Mortician at Rinehart and Sons in Jesup, GA and then moved to Hinesville, GA where he was employed by Carter Funeral Home. In September 1952, he joined the staff of Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors and enjoyed 50 years of service before retiring in 2002.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Leona Tyre Sapp, of Savannah, one daughter, Cassandra Bonner Dave, four sons, Irvin J. Sapp, Jr. Becky, Stephen A. Sapp, Sr. Phyllis Ann, Larry E. Sapp Kimberly, and Jody L. Sapp Deirdre. He is also survived by two sisters, Lois Hettich John, and Frances Shupe Larry, three brothers, Ernest E. Sapp Jeanette H. Luverne Sapp Frances, and Jimmy R. Sapp Opal, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at Southside Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends in Jesup at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
Burial will follow in the Jesup City Cemetery.
