Eugene J. "Andy" Dischner

Andy Dischner, 84, died peacefully Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Candler Hospital. Andy grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and as a young man was very athletic and enjoyed playing many sports including ice/pond hockey and football. Football was a sport for which Andy would maintain a special passion throughout his life. Upon graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served on a B-29 bomber crew toward the end of World War II.

After his enlistment in the military, Andy attended the University of Pittsburgh where he played football. He also later played semipro football in Pittsburgh, including a game where his team beat Johnny Unitas' semipro team 6-0. Other pursuits Andy enjoyed included fishing, hunting and golf.

He was an active member of the Elks in Pittsburgh and was a past Exalted Ruler.

Andy was very proud of his career with the Borden Company. After 41 years, he retired as an executive in their dairy division in 1990.

Andy and his wife Susan moved to Savannah from Pittsburgh in 1994. During these last 17 years he has been a communicant at St. James Catholic Church where he was active as a reader. He enjoyed his life at the Landings playing golf, cooking and traveling with Susan.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Swain Auchter Dischner of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, John Auchter Dischner and Elizabeth Guenther Dischner; two grandchildren, Katharine and Charles Dischner all of Wilmette, IL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass: 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 29, 2011 at St. James Catholic Church with the Reverend Mark Ross, Celebrant.

Andy was a dear friend for nearly 30 years. We golfed and fished together and traveled with he and Susan while in Pittsburgh and later in Savannah. He, behind that rough, German veneer, was a man with a heart of gold. He will be missed.
