I was in Mr. Eckwall's seventh grade English class during his first year at Richmond Hill. I still remember how, on September 11, 2001, he broke the news to my class about what was happening because the rest of the school was trying to keep us in the dark. Mr. Eckwall, you were a great teacher and you will be missed.

Chip was my brother for 23 years, and I will always love him. His love of his life was Mary and Ben and I was reminded of it every couple of days of how proud and lucky he was to have them. A great husband and the best father a child could ever have. He lived his life for them and will always watch over them. I love them with all my heart and we will make him proud of us. His passion was teaching, next to being the best fisherman I have ever known. He taught me to fish always out fished me, & also talked about his students and how proud he was of them at RHMS. I feel I know all his 7th graders, the projects, and his STEM program. He was thrilled about it. Chip could do anything. Reading about the messages here from his friends and students gives me solace. RHMS was so blessed and privileged to have him, and God wanted him to be a greater Angel/Teacher with him, so make him proud students. You know he is watching. I love you Chipu. We will always have him in our hearts and minds.

Mr. Eckwall was my 7th grade teacher back in 2006 and has since been a favorite. He was an amazing techer. He will be missed.
- Caitlin, RichmondHill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was truly a unique person and a wonderful edition to the RHMS staff and teachers. He gave life to learning science, and I don't think I was ever bored in his class. I wish that he had more time on this earth to be with his wonderful family that he talked so highly about in class, but he is in a better, more beautiful place now. Ben, this is particularly for you: I know that your father loved you very much by the way he talked about you in class. He was very proud of how well you swim, and how smart you are. I remember one time when he took up almost half of the class period talking about how you described all about pinecones. He always smiled when he spoke about you and your mother, and we got an update of your well-being almost everyday. Mrs. Eckwall, I know this can't be easy for you at all, but in the end, everything will be alright. You both have my deepest sympathies, and I will be keeping you all in my prayers. God bless you all.
- Bridget, , GA
Prayers and much love to you and Ben. Que Dios lo tenga en su gloria y que los bendiga a todos ustedes.

Mr. Eckwall was the best teacher a person could have. He cared about his students, he helped them when they needed it, and he stood up for his students. I never thought this day would come, just Friday he was his happy normal self teaching us stuff and making us laugh and smile. It was really hard going into school today knowing Mr. Eckwall wouldn't be there to make me laugh and smile. Walking into class without a greeting from him didn't feel right. He has taught me so much, not only about science but about life. He always had a smile on his face and the ability to make others smile and laugh. All my prayers go out to you and your family. I love and miss you very much Mr. Eckwall, nothing is going to be the same without you.
- Elena Stewart, Richmond Hill, GA
Many of my friends and I today shared our happy memories of Mr. Eckwall. We laughed through the tears of never ending pain that were brought with seeing his school environment. The school staff was just as devastated as the students today. In his honor, respect, and loving memory, many students wore black, the color of mourning, and/or blue, the color his personality. Blue for him did not mean sadness, but life and laughter and pure joy. It will indeed be hard to get through this ordeal, yet, we will get through this. It will most certainly not be today or tomorrow, but rather in an undefined time period that the pain will ease. My fondest memories of him I will share with his family tomorrow as well as something I wrote for them to keep his memory alive. God Bless you Mr. Eckwall. God Bless your family.
- Avery Waters, Savannah, GA
Mary, my heart breaks for you and Ben. Know I am thinking and praying for you. Michelle Dunn

I only had him for a short time before I moved, but while I had him, I enjoyed it. He made science class so fun, and made school better in general. Rest in peace, Mr. Eckwall. I feel bad for the people who didn't get to have him. Goodbye, man. I'm sure gonna miss ya.
- George Belsky, , GA
By far, Mr.Eckwall was the greatest teacher I ever had. He interacted with the class through a vocabulary that young students could understand clearly. He was so much fun and made school fun. We never knew what he was going to be up to when we got to class. My great sadness goes out to his wife and little Eckwall Jr. aka Ben. I will never forget his hilarious teaching style. Thank you for your wonderful guidance, Mr. Eckwall. I will miss you greatly! You and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers.
- Emma Fisher, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was by far the greatest teacher I have ever had. He always found ways to make class entertaining and enjoyable. I always looked forward to going to his class. He was a fantastic teacher and a wonderful person.
- Hunter Benbrooks, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was a great teacher, friend and person in general. I've learned so much from him and will never forget him. My prayers go out to his family. He will be missed.
- Charlize Lenzy, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was a wonderful teacher, friend, and what I've heard a fantastic husband and father. He always knew how to brighten up my day no matter what. He would always make jokes and teach us lessons in interesting ways. Truly 1000 characters is not enough to describe how wonderful he truly was. I know that he will always be in the hearts of his family friends and students. My heart goes out not only to his wife and son but to everyone that knew him. Know that he will always be with me no matter the circumstances and that even though he is not here he will always be able to make me laugh. Rest in peace Mr. Eckwall and god bless all the sad souls who miss him.
- Madison Thomas, Richmond Hill, GA
Every time I saw Mr. Eckwall in the hallway we would joke around with each other and I wish I could have been in his class. I will miss him and I am very sorry for your loss.
- Zachary Stender, Richmond Hill, GA
I had Mr. Eckwall for my homeroom teacher in seventh grade. In the mornings I would usually wake up early just to get to school to hear what he had to teach us. He is certainly one of the best teachers I've ever had. I will miss him. I am very sorry for your loss.
- Joshua Stender, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was more than a teacher but an inspiration, role model and friend. I had him over eight years ago and I can still recite the 'jaberwockey' in its entirety. I can remember how excited he was when Ben was born and how he would always check the prison menus and compare it to the food we were being served at school. He was such an incredible man and made such a difference in my life! He will certainly be missed by many!
- Katelyn Rawlings, , GA
On April 26, the world lost a great man, teacher, husband, father, and friend. Mr. Eckwall may not have been one of my teachers but whenever I got a chance to talk to him I always had a smile on my face. Mr. Eckwall devoted his time to his students and cared about them. He could always make somebody cheer up if they were having a bad day. I pray for his family over their immense loss. I am also in deep sorrow for his son. It saddens me that he lost his father at such a young age. God Bless Mr. Eckwall!
- Tripp Tucker, Richmond Hill, GA
I had Mr. Eckwall as my teacher last year and he was my favorite teacher ever. I've learned so much from him and now I still remember the things he thought me last year. He was an amazing teacher and he will be missed.
- Alexis Payne, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr.Eckwall was the greatest teacher I've had by far. He wasn't just an inspiring teacher but a friend and role model that taught me more than than I ever expected at the begining of the year. I would get up early in the morning so he could teach me more because I enjoyed his company and to watch how he interacted with his students. Every day I would look forward to going to his class because of the happiness and laughter that always filled the room whenever he was there. His teachings will stick with me forever. His family is in my prayers and even though hes not with us physically anymore I know he's watching over us. He will be greatly missed.
- Rileigh Sisco, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was one of the best teachers. He was loved by pretty much everyone. I used to love walking to & from lunch with him. My friend, Maddie Gorsuch, & I would talk to him everyday going to & from lunch. When I was sitting at the lunch table, he would come up & try to guess what kind of sandwich I had that day. He is the only teacher who has ever given me a nickname, banana. I have had so much fun in his class. He will be missed dearly.
- Breanna Barrett, Richmond Hi, GA

We are so deeply saddened for your loss. 'Mr. Eckwall' was our son's absolutely favorite teacher-ever! Mark is now finishing his eigth grade year at RHMS, and had Mr. Eckwall for seventh grade science. Mark still went to his classroom at least twice a week to visit, and constantly spoke about him. We were just talking about putting together an offshore fishing trip - yesterday!! And, Mark asked if we could invite Mr. Eckwall!! We said of course!! Then we came home last night to this horrific news. Mark saw the posts on his FB. He, and we are absolutely devastated!! What a fine man and a great teacher! We are so very sorry. We are praying for you and your beautiful son. He loved him so. The Wilsons; Michael, Janene, and Mark
- Michael and Janene Wilson, Richmond Hill, GA
We are very sad to hear this news. My son, CJ Green is a current student of Mr. Eckwall's and has enjoyed his time in the class this year. He really liked Mr. Eckwall and he is upset about this news. Our prayers go out to the family. He was a very good teacher and a nice person.

- Natalie GaNun, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr.Eckwall was a great man and an amazing science teacher. Just on Friday he was having a fun time doing dissections. Everytime my friends and I passed him on the way to lunch he would say something funny. I doubt I will be able to walk back from lunch without crying because he will be absent from my daily routine. To his family, I am so sorry for your loss and you will be in my prayers. Mr.Eckwall was a fine character and will be missed tremendously.
- Marcela Niles, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr.Eckwall was one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life. He always knew how to make something interesting, and keep you engaged. He is the main reason that Science is my best and favorite subject.... The world just won't be the same without him, but I am happy that he is in a better place and can rest in Peace <3<3<3 *P.S. My blessings and prayers to the family*
- Joi Martin, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall will always be one of my favorite teachers. He made everyone laugh and actually enjoy school. Everybody always looked forward to his class everyday. I wouldn't be as interested in science as I am now if I hadn't been in his class last year. My prayers go out to him and his family. We all will love and miss him. <3<3<3
- Maddy Blanton, Richmond Hill, GA
I cannot express to Mary and Ben, his two favorite people in the whole world, how deeply saddened I am to hear of this news. When he spoke of you, he always smiled and his face lit up. My heart goes out to the both of you. Having a similar and painful loss in my life, Mr. Eckwall made it known that if I needed anything, to just call. I am here for you in the same capacity. Chip was a brilliant man and teacher who touched the lives of many. I was fortunate to work on a 7th grade team with him...honest sometimes brutally honest:, funny, such character, and a joy to be around. He enlightened many and sparked an interest in Science to those students who were fortunate enough to have him as a teacher. His heart was filled with love. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
- Dawn Houck, Richmond Hill, GA
It's times like this when the school comes together as one. Mr. Eckwall, though I have not had him as a teacher, I have had friends who have had him as a teacher. He is a wonderful man, and a funny one too. We are deeply sad for the loss of him, and I bless his family. He will be missed, and we should all pay our respects for him.
- David London, Richmond Hill, Ga, GA
Mr. Eckwall was one of my favorite and most memorable teachers. In high school my classmates and I still reminisce on the fun we had in his class. My heart goes out to his wife and little Ben that we used to hear so much about, this is so sudden, but God wanted Mr.Eckwall to himself. He'll never be forgotten or replaced. You'll be so missed and I pray your family's strength. A great man will be missed. Another angel in heaven. Rest in Peace Mr.Eckwall.
- Brianna Kelly, , GA

Mr.Eckwall was my science teacher and was the best science teacher ever! He was a funny, nice, and a very wonderful teacher. We will miss him very much! My condolences go out to his wife Mary and his seven year old son Ben. We all wonder what school is going to be like tommorow with out him, but we have to remember to keep on going and things will get better. I can't imagine what the family is going through right now. We all miss you very much Mr.Eckwall please look down on our class and help us get through the rest of the school year. We will miss you very much you are dearly beloved by all students at RHMS!!!!
- Sydney DeLong, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr. Eckwall was and still is one of the funniest and most dry humored teachers I have ever met. He has informed me on scientific knowledge as well as rocketry. I enjoyed him as a teacher, mentor, and most importantly, a friend. Though I rarely spoke with Mr. Eckwall he will always make an impression in my mind as well as my heart. Mr. Eckwall always was a fact based person in school, and the last conversation I had with him was about cellular regeneration and regrown organs. We had a great time arguing our points, and overall it was a great day. Mr. Eckwall will never be forgotten, and to his family, my prayers are with you. We will all miss him at Richmond Hill Middle School. -Logan Brown
- Logan Brown, Richmond Hill, GA
My condolences to Mr. Eckwall and family. He was a wonderful Science teacher and his thoughts and knowledge has stuck with me into my eighth grade year. I was devastated to hear the news as were many students at RHMS. We all love and miss Mr. Eckwall. He will be remembered.
- Madison Kornegay, , GA
Mr. Eckwall was my favorite teacher by far. His unorthodox ways of teaching immediately made a mark on me. Though to me he was more than a teacher, he was a mentor, guiding me along an academic path and shaping my personality. I recall his stubborn attempts to get me to skip to 9th grade regardless of the fact that my mom wouldn't let me. His passing more than saddens me, and has left a hole in my life no one else could fill. I looked forward to having him further teach me his ways and learn his humorous opinions on different colleges. From the daily snide comments we would throw back and forth, to the arguments I would always beat him in, to his stories about surfing in Florida, I shall miss him greatly. My thoughts go out to his wife and his son Ben. This is a truly tragic loss of one of the greatest men I've ever known. I shall remember him for countless years to come.
- Justin Schofield, Richmond Hill, GA
This morning, I received a text message telling me Mr. Eckwall had died. I believed it was a prank until I was sent the link to his obituary. No person will ever be able to replace Mr. Eckwall in any of our lives. I still can't believe this has happened because I never thought I would lose him. I love Mr. Eckwall with all my heart. He had a very positive impact in my life. Because of him, I have accomplished many great things and owe him much. I feel beyond sorry for his seven year old son, Ben, and his lovely wife, Mary, both of which he talked about with so much passion. I am very sorry Mary Eckwall. I know you will hear this a lot, but please accept my condolences and allow his students, past and present, to be able to attend the funeral. Thank you and I am sorry for your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you. He was one of the greatest men I will ever know. Chip Arvid Oscar Eckwall II will always be remembered as well as respected by the students who he affected greatly.
- Avery Waters, Savannah, GA
Some of our favorite dinner conversations began with the phrase, 'You'll never guess what Mr. Eckwall said today.' The more our daughter talked about this remarkable man the more we wanted to meet him and as someone who works with kids I wanted to impact students lives like he did. My heart goes out to his family and his parents. No one should have to bury their child. Please take comfort in the fact that Mr. Eckwall impacted countless lives of students and their parents.
- Sara Kornegay, Richmond Hill, GA
Mr.Eckwall was great, and I loved him as a teacher. We will all miss him so much. My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

Dear Mr.Eckwall, all I can say is that you were my all time favorite teacher. You made this year great for me. By 4th period I was tired and stressed and ready to go home but you always picked up my mood. You taught my class not only about life science but about life itself. Every day I would strive to get a compliment from you and when I got it I felt amazing inside. You were always nice to me and you got me over my shyness. I will always be your Woody. I am praying for your family. May you rest in piece.

Mr Eckwall was not only my favorite teacher, but also one of my favorite people. Everyone walked away from his class having learned something, whether it was Biology, trivia questions, life lessons... He knew it all. Mr Eckwall was one of the wisest and most brilliant people I knew. He was wonderful, and my heart goes out to his wife, and little Ben, his favorite people in the world, of which he could never talk enough about. I will love and miss you forever, Mr Eckwall. - Robert & Debbie Johnson, savannah, GA
it makes me sad that Ben will never get the mentoring from his Dad that his Dad provided to our children. My hope and prayer is that others can help Ben the way your husband mentored our kids. Chip emailed back regarding summer programs for our 4th grader last week and still cared about the progress of our daughter who was one of his former students ... It wasn't just a job .. He cared about the whole person and their future. Another person mentioned the conversations around the dinner table ... 'you know what Mr Exkwall said today?' He really made the kids view the world with new eyes. There are always those teachers that we remember throughout our lives .... Your husband was one of those special few. Heaven has gained an angel. Our prayer is that others will be there for Ben as your husband was there for RHMS' kids. Our hearts are so sad for your loss.
- J. Clement, Richmond Hill, GA
You will be missed, our Friend. Your family and many friends are now comforting Mary and Ben. We will do our part to see that your lovely wife and wonderful son are cared for. Go in peace...don't worry. Look down on us from time to time.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by your loss. We are here for you in any way you need us and our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dear Mr.Eckwall, all I can say is that you were my all time favorite teacher. You made this year great for me. By 4th period I was tired and stressed and ready to go home but you always picked up my mood. You taught my class not only about life science but about life itself. Every day I would strive to get a compliment from you and when I got it I felt amazing inside. You were always nice to me and you got me over my shyness. I will always be your Woody. I am praying for your family. May you rest in piece.
