Betty W. Siler

Lilian (Betty) Walford Siler, age 91 died, Monday, June 9, 2014. Born in Cheddar, Somerset, England on June 7, 1923, she arrived at three years of age living on the peninsula south of San Francisco. She was educated on the West Coast but continued learning throughout her life for she enjoyed people and all the beauty of the world. She started doing volunteer work at an early age due to World War II. Her work as an advertising clerk for Standard Oil of California (Chevron) led to her being the Victory Garden model for Shell Oil plus photo model for many large companies. At the same time, she was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Advisors to Charm Magazine; then traveling to New York as a Guest Editor of Charm Magazine.
She met her husband in San Francisco, then a LTJG with the United States Coast Guard, he later became head of the service as a four star admiral. They lived in many parts of this country and traveled the world, meeting kings, queens and presidents. Her partner, best friend, and husband of sixty plus years, Owen Wesley Siler, Admiral USCG, Retired, died July 17, 2007.
Always willing to volunteer her time and energy, Mrs. Siler worked with the American Women's Volunteer Service during World War II. She was an active wife with the Officer's Wives Clubs, a national director of the Navy League, Vice-President of the Washington, DC Navy League Council and a life member and board member of the Sailor, Soldier, Marine and Airman's Club in Washington, DC. She served as Ways and Means Chairman of the Washington, DC Decorator's Show House while her husband was attending the National War College in Washington. Serving on numerous boards, she sat on the board of Carl Vinson Hall, was an active member of the Goodwill Industries Guild, the Missouri Historical Society and was co-chairman of the 1979 Embassy Tour in Washington, DC
After her husband retired, in Washington, DC, she was asked to join a conference/special events company working as a speaker on Washington, DC and as a management liaison.
They moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah in 1987. At The Landings she was one of the volunteer coordinators at The Village Library, and later President of The Village Library. In 1999 she was chosen for the "Outstanding Landings Citizen Award" from Golden-K Kiwanis. One highlight of her life was christening of the United States Coast Guard ice breaker "Polar Sea."
She assisted in the early years of the Savannah Music Festival and was a member of the Savannah Women's Guild and the Friends of Music. She worked as a volunteer and greeter at St. John's Episcopal Church of which she was also a member. She also volunteered at the Memorial Hospital Health Library.
In 2005 they moved to the Marshes on Skidaway Island where she worked as a volunteer running the library. She loved living at the Marshes community among her many friends.
She had a great appreciation for gardens, flowers, and beauty in and around her home. She loved books, music, tennis, needlepoint, and people. Also, she was proud to have been a Brownie, a Girl Scout, and then a Rainbow Girl.
As a proud military wife, she took the partnership very seriously with great devotion to her adopted country, but always proud of her English roots. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, C.E.V. and May P. Hayhoe Walford, her brother, Gurth E. Walford, her sister, Faith Walford Guffin, her sister-in-law, Sue Kenny Walford, and her niece, Claudia Ann Guffin Rucker.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Gregory John and Terri Siler of Pooler, GA; her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha Siler and James V. Antista of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, David Wesley Siler and wife Karen, Wesley Howard Siler and wife Nessie, Christopher Justin Antista, and Lauren Elizabeth Antista; great-grandchildren, Alexandra Siler and Nicholas Owen Siler; and nieces, Gretchen Walford Miller and Linda Guffin Ratcliff, as well as nieces and nephews in California and England.
Memorial Service will be 12:00 p.m., Friday, June, 20, 2014 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 West Macon Street, Savannah
Remembrances may be made to the Humane Society.
