Dorothy G. Ellis

Dorothy Godin Ellis – Savannah
Dorothy Godin Ellis, always known affectionately as “Jo” to her friends and family, died August 24, 2014. Born in Escanaba, Michigan on October 1, 1922, she was the daughter of Aquilla & Margaret Godin. Jo was raised in Menominee, Michigan and graduated from Menominee High School. Thereafter, she attended nursing school at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois where she earned her RN designation. Jo then moved to Washington D.C. where she was a nurse at Georgetown Hospital. In D.C. she met the love of her life, Bob Ellis, while playing tennis. They were married in Washington in 1950 at St. John’s Church on Lafayette Square. The newlyweds moved to New Haven where Bob was attending Yale University. While working at the Yale School of Medicine, she became one of the nation’s first nurse practitioners. She retired from nursing and followed her husband as he taught sociology at Michigan State, Southern California, Stanford, Oregon, Maryland, and Georgia. She loved to watch and play tennis; she represented the Republican Party as a state delegate; and was an avid bridge player. Many of her lifelong friends were made around a table of cards. She is predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Roger, Morgan, and Albie, her son, Roger Morgan Ellis and her husband of 63 years, Bob Ellis. She is survived by her son, Robert (Rob) Arthur Ellis, Jr., and his wife, Debra, two grandchildren, Rachel Page Ellis and Robert (Trey) Arthur Ellis, III, and her brother, Gary Godin, of West Olive, Michigan. A private interment ceremony will be held later this fall in Athens, Georgia among family members. The family wishes to thank all her caregivers at Savannah Square, Visiting Angels, and Hospice Savannah. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to The Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, 17th Floor, Chicago, IL 60601 (www.alz.org).
