Celebrating the life of
Col. Terence Andrew Powers (Ret., USA)
December 19, 1924 - August 09, 2019

Colonel Terence Andrew Powers (Retired) died peacefully at age 94 on Friday, August 9th, 2019 after a long and happy life. Terry was the last surviving child of 9 children in the Irish Catholic family of Charles F. and Loretto M. Powers. Born on December 19, 1924 in Savannah, he was one of the greatest men of the greatest generation. A 1949 West Point graduate, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and retired in 1977. A life-long Hibernian Society member, he leaves behind a large community of people whose lives are better for knowing him.
Terry dedicated his life to service to his country, to his family, and to social causes. He was a military man with about 40 years in uniform, and more than 30 years on active duty in the U.S. Army.
He attended Marist School and graduated from Benedictine Military Academy in 1942, then attended Marion Military Institute. It was WWII and eager to join up like all his brothers, he enlisted in the Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant. In 1945 he was selected to attend West Point, where he graduated in 1949 as a Transportation Corps officer. During his Army career, he served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His assignments took him to Japan, Germany, Turkey, Panama, and numerous stateside posts. After serving as a combat engineer in the Korean War, he then went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Engineering at the University of Michigan. As a Transportation Corps Logistician, he commanded Army organizations at company, battalion, and higher levels. He also served as a staff officer with Army and Joint Service organizations to include Vietnam, the Pentagon and Military Assistance Missions. He also served as a Professor of Military Science at John Carroll University’s ROTC program, which was known historically as “The West Point of the Transportation Corps”, fitting for a Transportation Corps officer. He received many awards and honors to include the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Legion of Merit.
Terry and his first wife, Jeannette Rouse Powers, returned to Savannah upon his military retirement in 1977 and enjoyed several years before she passed away in 1986. He initially worked at the family-owned C.F. Powers Insurance Agency. He then worked for ten years at ZIM Container Service, retiring for a second time in 1989. Terry and his second wife Carolyn were married in 1996. They shared a loving and caring marriage over the ensuing years. His longevity is in no small measure attributable to the happy life he enjoyed in his relationship with Carolyn and her extended family. He was blessed to have the strong support of good women and a large family throughout his long life.
He enjoyed volunteer work at the Social Apostolate of Savannah and St. James Catholic Church. He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Knights of Columbus and Immanuel Baptist Church Silver Nuggets groups. He loved to dance, create beautiful gardens, spend time with his family, and share a good joke. His Irish eyes twinkled with mischief when pulling a good prank.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Holland Powers, and children: Jeannette Powers Hodson (Bob), Terence A. Powers, Jr. (Kathleen), Angela Powers Williams (Stephen); Carolyn’s children: Angela Walston Moore (Walter), Rodney E. Walston (Tanya Hamerler) and Liticia Walston Weissinger; as well as twelve grandchildren (Nathan Zoss (Melissa), Amy Massey (Charlie), Nick Zoss (Michelle), Ben Zoss, Lauren Williams, Morgan Bulloch (Donald), Mara Weissinger, Abigail Moore, Hannah Weissinger, Rebecca Moore, Cooper Walston and Sadie Walston), and six great-grandchildren (Soriya Massey, Sawyer Massey, Galen Massey, Finley Massey, Fiona Zoss and Cordelia Zoss), as well as a large extended family which is spread across many part of the United States.
The family will receive friends from 5-6 pm , and a Rosary Service will begin at 6 pm on Thursday, August 15th at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be at St. James Catholic Church on Friday, August 16th at 10 am. Honorary pallbearers will be the 1942 class of Benedictine Military School and members of The Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Interment will follow at Hillcrest Abbey Cemetery with military honors.
A special thanks for all of his caregivers who honored him with their care.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 8412 Whitfield Avenue, Savannah, 31406.
