Celebrating the life of

Joseph A. "Tampa Joe" Booker

Passed away on August 07, 2015

Joseph A.

Joseph A. “Tampa Joe” Booker, 79, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2015 after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Joe was the son of Joseph A. Booker, Sr. and Elfrieda Schroder Booker. After growing up in Ardsley Park in Savannah, Joe moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1972 and was a fixture in the marine industry until his retirement. He was a licensed boat captain, making many transatlantic deliveries. Joe was a United States Naval veteran, having served on the USS Lexington. Joe had a passion for the sea.

Joe had many talents and interests. He was a founding Member of the German Heritage Society of Savannah. He was an avid HAM radio operator, licensed pilot, musician, community advocate, master tinkerer, breakfast companion, and friend of Bill W. for 21 years. The latter was the proudest accomplishment of his later life.

Joe is survived by his children, J A Booker (Stacie) and Lillian Nelson of St. Petersburg; grandchildren, Michael and Kathryn Booker, and Jacob Nelson; siblings, Ann Booker Mackey, Randy Booker and Steve Booker (Marie), all of Savannah. He was predeceased by his sister, Elfrieda Booker Hendrix. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances from the Tybee Sunday group, Palma Ceia Presbyterian, American Victory Radio Club, Tampa Amateur Radio Club, Pach’s breakfast crowd, Gandy Civic Association, and HAMs around the world. His Southern charm, quick wit and willingness to “call it like he seen it” made him a trusted friend who you could always count on for a big “Joe style” hug. He touched the lives of many and will be missed dearly.

A “Sailing Away” Memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Savannah Yacht Club Sail Loft Saturday, August 15th at 2:00 pm.

I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Booker. May you find comfort in the promise at Revelation 21:4 "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

- Mrs. Khan, Snellville, GA

Memories are deep; from the days of grammar school with "lucky" Joe living right across the street from the school to the days of newly married and living right across the street from us on Wilmington Island. We saw a lot of Joe those days in the early 1960s and they bring back wonderful memories.
