Eugene E. "Gene" Hiers
August 19, 1942 - June 27, 2016
Thunderbolt - Eugene Ellis “Gene” Hiers, 73, passed away from this world into the next as he was traveling back home from his final vacation with his beloved wife, Nancy and their adorable dog, Buddy. Gene was not what one would call a frequent visitor at a formal church, but he was a man of faith and is now with his Heavenly Father at peace. He was the oldest surviving of six children of Eugene and Narlene Hiers who preceded him in death along with his sister, Alice, and brother, Steve.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Gail, and son, James Allen “Jimmy”, his brother, Carlisle (Sara), his sister, Joann, and his brother, Len (Renee) along with many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces and numerous cousins, all of whom he loved dearly.
Gene graduated from H.V. Jenkins High School High School and soon went to work at Savannah Machine and Foundry (later Ductile Iron) and advanced to a leadership position. He next worked with brother, Steve for Hiers Woodworking and Remodeling and later retired from C.A.T., where as with all of his endeavors, made many lasting friendships and universally, was loved and appreciated by all who knew him.
Gene was an avid sportsman, and being the oldest, taught his brothers and later his son how to hunt, shoot and fish, and he spent many of his most enjoyed experiences afield or on the water. He was a consummate and prodigious woodworker and builder and continued this into retirement and was never idle. He was most at ease at his longtime home in Thunderbolt or at his special ‘getaway” at Shellman’s Bluff. He also loved his many visits to the Smokey Mountains. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten by his numerous friends, relatives, neighbors and adoring family.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
The funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2016 in the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
