Celebrating the life of
Alexander P. "Sonny" Solomon, IV
May 28, 1951 - July 31, 2016
TYBEE ISLAND - Surrounded by the love of his family and the peace of the Holy Spirit, A. P. "Sonny" Solomon, IV passed on July 31st, 2016, at his home on Tybee Island after a one year battle with Leukemia. He was 65. Sonny is survived by his wife Diana, sons Perry and Seth, and four grandchildren.
Sonny was a servant of the Lord and his fellow man. He was a 1969 graduate of Savannah High School and went on to take classes at Armstrong State College. In 1970 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Sonny became a crew chief on the C-118 Liftmaster and served eight months in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force as a Sergeant in 1974.
It was during his tour at Andrews AFB that Sonny met Diana Pierce of Oxon Hill, Maryland, while moonlighting as an automobile mechanic at a service station just outside the base. It has been insinuated that Ms. Pierce was having her vehicle serviced at abbreviated intervals in hope that Sonny would ask her out. He finally figured it out, and they were married in October of 1973 at Chapel-by-the-Sea Baptist Church on Tybee Island, Sonny's hometown, where they settled and raised their two boys.
Actively involved in several volunteer organizations, Sonny enjoyed giving-back to the community and church that raised him. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he became a volunteer firefighter with the Tybee Island Fire Department, where he served for more than 30 years. He was also actively involved in the Marine Rescue Squadron (MRS), Chapter 1-A on Tybee, an organization co-founded by his father. The MRS grew to be a national organization with chapters throughout Georgia and South Carolina, chartered to provide volunteer search and rescue operations using private vessels and local knowledge of rivers and inlets to supplement gaps in the coverage provided by the U. S. Coast Guard. Sonny was elected and served as Skipper and treasurer of MRS Chapter 1-A.
Sonny was hired by "the gas company" (as he referred to it) on Elba Island in 1978 and worked for them (the company would change names several times) in various capacities for over 30 years. He eventually became a pipeline technician and spent a lot of time on the road managing dozens of natural gas metering stations throughout the southeast.
Upon retiring from the gas company, Sonny was amazed to find out that people would actually pay him to take them out in his boat. He formed Crab Creek Charters, and gave guided tours of the waters surrounding Tybee. Sharing the beauty of his childhood playground with others brought him great joy. He was also enjoying driving larger and somewhat exotic boats for the Bloody Point Resort water taxi, making scheduled trips to Daufuskie Island from downtown Savannah. Even after his diagnosis, and during a short remission of his cancer, he continued to run the boats to Daufuskie because he loved the people and the job so very much.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel-by-the-Sea Baptist Church, Tybee Island, GA. Interment will be at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider a donation to Hospice Savannah or Strong Against Cancer (strongagainstcancer.org), a medical partnership that is beating Leukemia in children using immunotherapy, a viable alternative to chemotherapy that Sonny helped research at Emory.

What an awesome tribute to an awesome man. Just to look upon his face brought warm feelings of love and caring and always that big smile. Diana, you were the love of his life as were Perry, his family, Seth and Joey. His love for all of you was very evident. When John and I last saw him, he was standing on the Bloody Point Dock. We were all surprised to see each other and we knew then he was not well just from his appearance. We shared big hugs and will always remember the kind, friendly, loving man he was. We have prayed for healing for some time but know now that God had other plans for him. We send much love to each of you and Sonny, may you rest in the joy of the arms of Jesus, your Mom and your Dad.

Diana, Perry and Seth - We are so saddened by Sonny's passing, yet know that he is at peace and free from any earthly pain. People can best be measured by the respect they give to others, their willingness to share their failures, as well as their success, their love of family, and simply doing the right thing even when there is no one around to see. By all measures, Sonny was a quiet, unassuming giant among us. We'll miss bringing him a cup of coffee in the morning, sharing the beauty of the river and talking about our children and their lives. Sonny will be in our hearts forever.
- Susan and Andy Mason, Daufuskie Island, SC
As I read the messages left for you and your family I see a common thread. Sonny was admired and his love of the Lord obvious. So I won't repeat that part as it was my thought also. But I want to add something else...his love for you Diana! He used to come in to the office at school after he retired as ask if he could "pick up his bride" for lunch. He cherished you. And I am so happy that you had that.
- Christine Sapp, Savannah, GA

Use Sonny's amazing life as motivation to committ to a plan to personally try to bring joy & comfort to someone who needs it. Maybe it is someone you know, or maybe it's that elderly couple in your neighbourhood who needs help with their yard work. Celebrate Sonny's life - this is his gift to you.

My sincere condolences for your loss. I worked with Sonny in 1978 and 1979 during my two-years working for "the gas company" at Elba Island. I saw Sonny a couple of times over the years when we'd have projects there and I always appreciated how nice and accommodating he was. We shared the commonality of being Air Force veterans and I'll always remember the Christmas party my last in Savannah. You family is in my prayers and Sonny will live in our hearts as his spirit flourishes in Heaven. Respectfully, Doss Sims

My prayers go out to you and your family. May God's love help heal the hurt.

I never met Sonny. I bumped into his obituary while looking for something else. I read the entire, beautiful obituary. He is gone and what is left? You.
