Celebrating the life of

Harold Benjamin Horton

January 30, 1937 - August 06, 2025

Harold Benjamin Horton

Savannah mourns the loss of a beloved son this past week, on the 6th day of August, as Harold Benjamin Horton peacefully departed this world at home, surrounded by his devoted family.

Born and raised in the heart of Savannah, Harold spent his childhood playing in Forsyth Park, where his love for the city began. He attended Savannah High School on Washington Avenue and later graduated from Armstrong College, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors. Harold married the love of his life, Carolyn Strickland, originally from Pembroke, and together they began their family in Atlanta, where they welcomed their daughters, Leigh Ebberwein (John) and Shannon Tratechaud (Shane), before returning to their cherished Savannah.

Harold was actively engaged in his community, especially at Saint Peter the Apostle Church, where he shared his faith and friendship with many. He was affectionately known by a variety of names that reflected the many roles he played in others' lives: "Da," a term of endearment from his ten grandchildren (Patrick [Ellen], Caroline [Chris], Layton, Andrew, Jacob, Asher, Stephen, Mary, Clare and Graham), four great-grandchildren (Teddy, Emma Bates, Durham, Frances), “Hal” among his friends from the golf course and the Optimist Club, “HB” to his close colleagues at Southern Bell, where he dedicated 37 years of service before retiring in 1990, “Uncle Harold” to numerous nieces and nephews, and “Coach” to the countless young athletes he mentored in basketball over the years.

In 1960, Harold was called to active duty with the Naval Reserves, demonstrating his strong sense of duty and patriotism.

Harold, a true native of Savannah, had an extraordinary passion for sharing his knowledge and stories with everyone he encountered, whether they were friends or strangers. His warmth and wisdom left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Harold is preceded in death by his loving parents, Claude and Elizabeth Horton, and his siblings: brothers Arthur, Buddy, and Richard, and sister Virginia (Beilman). He leaves behind a legacy of love and an unwavering dedication to family. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel with a Rosary service immediately following at 5:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. A private burial will take place in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Our family wishes to express our gratitude to Hospice for the support they provided during our time of need. We are very thankful.

Harold was like a dad to me during the important developmental years of High School. I was so blessed and I’m so grateful to have gone on those FAMILY vacations. He was an amazing man. Sending my condolences, prayers, and hugs to all the family and people whose lives he touched. I wish I could be there to say goodbye.
