Emily Jones Horton

EMILY JONES HORTON

Emily Jones Horton, age 84 of Savannah, GA passed away just before dawn on June 4, 2025 in Maryville, Tennessee. She was born February 4, 1941, the eldest daughter of the late Miller and Kate Jones. Emily was raised in Savannah with her two brothers, graduating from Savannah High School in 1959 and earning a Bachelor’s of Education degree from University of Georgia in 1964. After college, Emily married the love of her life, the late Richard Horton, with whom she shared nearly 55 years of marriage. She followed his career across Georgia, Connecticut, and New Jersey before returning to Savannah.

Emily was a devoted wife and mother, embodying the virtues of a Proverbs 31 woman in every aspect of her life. She honored and supported her husband with unwavering devotion, served faithfully in her church, and dedicated herself to raising their only daughter, Becky. She was a steadfast anchor in the home, extending southern hospitality to her neighbors, and selflessly participating in family adventures.

After returning to Savannah, she dedicated almost 20 years to serving Chatham County elementary students as a librarian assistant, retiring in 2003. She found joy in Bible study, volunteering, genealogy, exploring nature, sewing, travel with friends, and visits with her two granddaughters. She was an enthusiastic partner in Richard’s quest to play golf in all 50 states, and while she loved the mountains of Tennessee during her final years with her daughter, Savannah was always her beloved, earthly home. With a strongly rooted faith, she had no fear in life or death, always knowing her true and final home was with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Mike Huffer, and two granddaughters, Emily Glover and husband Daniel, and Rachel Huffer. Also surviving are her two brothers, Talley Jones and wife Barbara of Savannah and Jim Jones of Ball Ground, a brother-in-law Harold Horton and wife Carol of Savannah, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family expresses deep gratitude to all who loved and cared for Emily during her time in Tennessee.

A memorial service will be held at Skidaway Community Church in Savannah at 2:00 on Saturday, June 21, 2025. A private interment will take place at Bonaventure Cemetery. Remembrances may be sent through Fox & Weeks, Savannah or donations to The Alzheimer’s Association.

GUEST BOOK

No words could ever describe the impact Emily had on my life as I was growing up in Danbury. Emily was always the voice of reason and calm. A true Southern lady, she showed me how to have grace in my life and with my family and friends. I will always be grateful for having had Richard, Emily and Becky as a part of my life. My thoughts and prayers are with Becky and her family.
