Celebrating the life of

Michael Francis Joseph Hogan, III

December 09, 1944 - May 22, 2023

Michael Francis Joseph Hogan, III

Michael Francis Joseph Hogan, III of Savannah, GA passed away at Memorial Hospital May 22, surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Michael was born in Savannah, GA to Michael Francis and Margaret Katherine (Dyer) Hogan on December 9, 1944. Raised in Savannah he attended Savannah High and Armstrong State College where he studied Criminal Justice.

After serving his country in the US Air Force he continued his dedication to public service by joining the FBI and becoming a fingerprint and identification expert and receiving his sharpshooter certification. Michael then joined the Chatham County Police Force as an officer and quickly worked to become a crime scene technician. While with the Chatham County Police force Michael was named as “Rookie of the Year”. Later he would join the Tybee Island Police force and retire at the rank of Lieutenant. In 1999 he was named “Police Officer of the Year” while serving at Tybee. Most recently he worked as a security officer for East Coast Terminals.

Michael loved to be on the water, he enjoyed boating and scuba diving but mostly enjoyed fishing. Like most fisherman, Michael’s stories about fishing were much bigger than the actual fish. Additionally, he was the master of the “dad” joke and his off beat sense of humor kept his family entertained and wondering what in the world he was going to say next.

Michael is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne; his daughters: Kimberly Hogan, Ticia Schaub (Mark) and Margaret “Toree” and son Steve Hogan (Jan); granddaughters: MaryKatherine Haycock (Liam) and Rebecca Jane Hogan; sister, Carol Guetherman (Steve) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a wife, Mary Jane Hammock; his sister, Ellen Hogan Murray and son, John David Hutson, Jr. There will be family services held May 25 in the Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Mike was a great guy. We will truly miss his sense of humor. We never knew what he was going to say when he walked through the door. I personally spent many hours with Mike & his son Steve. I think a lot of both of them. My deepest condolences to the family. He always cheered us up with a joke & a laugh.

I am so sorry to hear about Hogan. He was fun to be around when he used to watch after us at Optim. Great sense of humor! Also back in the day he worked with my brother in law at the Chatham county police department and recently for my nephew. Prayers for all the family. I know he will be missed.
