Celebrating the life of

Mary Fitzpatrick Hagan

September 21, 1952 - April 24, 2023

Mary Fitzpatrick Hagan

Mary Fitzpatrick Hagan, 70, died on April 24th, 2023, after a courageous 15-year fight against cancer.

A Savannah native, Mary was born on September 21, 1952, to the late John and Edna Fitzpatrick. She graduated from Savannah High School and matriculated to Georgia Southern College where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She was a devoted wife to the late Walter Kay Hagan, Jr., for 44 years and a dedicated, loving mother and “Gaga” to her children and grandchildren, as well as to those of the people she loved. She loved life in Savannah and was proud to be a member of the Junior League of Savannah and the Married Women’s Card Club. One of Mary’s greatest passions in her early life was ballet, an art she loved, and was able to continue professionally with the Savannah Ballet for many years. She worked at the Savannah Country Day School for 25 years, and served in the Administrative Office where she was a warm, welcoming, constant for students, parents, and visitors alike.

Mary’s foundation was grounded by three things: faith, family, and friends.  She was a lifelong communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, and proud to see her children baptized, confirmed, and married in the church she loved so dearly. She made friends at every stage of her life, all of whom enjoyed her well-known cooking and hospitality. The consummate hostess, the door and kitchen were always open. She loved entertaining family, friends and the friends of her children. You never knew when there might be an impromptu shag party or a pound of bacon fried up as a late night snack. She created a happy, welcoming home everyone enjoyed visiting.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Walter Kay Hagan, Jr. and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Francis Fitzpatrick. She is survived by her sister Edna Fitzpatrick Fox (Cissy), of Savannah, Georgia; daughters Alta Hagan Thorne of London, United Kingdom,  Mary Middleton Hagan Moore (Middi) of Albany, Georgia, Jane Hagan Davis of Leamington Spa, United Kingdom; son Walter Kay Hagan, III, of Birmingham, Alabama; sons-in-law Jonathan Parker Moore and Allen Donald Davis; and seven grandchildren: Honore Leigh Brockinton Thorne, Ariana Marie Kempner Thorne, John Middleton Moore (Jack), James Parker Moore (Parker), Hattie Camille Hagan, Beau Fitzpatrick Hagan, and Charles McAuley Davis (Charlie).

Mary’s family would like to express gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who helped Mary beat the odds of her grim diagnosis. She put forth an example of bravery and determination that will forever shape her children and grandchildren. They are especially appreciative of the care of Dr. Bud Robertson and Dr. Aaron Pederson, and Phoebe Hospice.

The funeral service will be held at half past eleven on Friday, April 28 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Savannah, Georgia, officiated by The Reverend Gavin G. Dunbar. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends at the Green-Meldrim House. Interment will be at half past two o'clock Friday afternoon in Greenwich Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to St. John's Church, 1 West Macon Street, Savannah, GA 31401, or The American Cancer Society, 3380 Chastain Meadows PKWY NW, Suite 200 Kennessaw, GA 30144, or Willson Hospice House,  320 Foundation Lane, Albany, GA 31707.

The Fitzpatricks lived in our block on Brandywine Road where our parents became friends through "Club," other social activities and sharing mutual friends for decades beginning in the 1960s. Mary and my sister Barbara were the same age; they went through high school together and for years they studied ballet. Mary had a God-given talent for ballet, standing out as a graceful dancer in the Junior League Follies while the rest of us tried to follow her lead. What I remember most about Mary was her kindness toward others. When Barbara was in her final months of life it was Mary who would call and ask about her, and on the morning of Barbara's funeral she pulled me aside at church and spoke encouraging words of comfort. Things like that are not forgotten but stay in one's heart. May she rest in peace.

- Julia J. Williams, Savannah, Georgia
