Celebrating the life of

Jane Wheeler Shuman

Passed away on March 31, 2023

Jane Wheeler Shuman

Jane Wheeler Shuman, 95, died peacefully on March 31, 2023.  Jane met Jimmy Shuman when she was thirteen years old and loved him the rest of her life.  They married after her twenty-first birthday and raised four children: Jimmy, George (Babette), Billy (Bonney), and Mary.  Jane and Jimmy celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 2013.  She was also predeceased by her parents: Ferry and Mildred; her sister: Mary (Jack); and two nephews: Jack (Barrie) and Ferry (Cindy).

Jane attended Sullins College, the University of Georgia, and obtained her Master of Education from Georgia Southern University.  She taught elementary school for over thirty years and was equally adored and feared by her students.  Jane loved her family, her friends, her Flamingos, and playing bridge (but not necessarily in that order).  Jane was a long time member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.  She is survived by her children; her beloved grandchildren: Becky (Mike), Chris (Whitney), John, Billy, and Mary Ellen (Thomas); three great-grandchildren: Gigi, Abbi, and Paige; and two nieces: Jane and Robin.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Remembrances may be sent to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2 St. Thomas Ave., Savannah, GA 31406.
