Beth Neville Whelan

Beth Neville Whelan, 89, died peacefully in the early morning hours on Monday, March 6, 2023, at Memorial University Medical Center.

The lifelong resident of Savannah was born on February 3, 1934, to the late Dr. Rufus Lester Neville and Sara Dobbins Neville. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother to five sons, and an amazing grandmother and great-grandmother. Beth was a true southern lady and a fierce defender of her “boys.” Beth mastered texting so that she could communicate with her grandchildren often. She always looked forward to their conversations and keeping up with their life events. Beth was a joyous and loyal friend, who cherished many lifelong friendships.

Beth was a devout Catholic and demonstrated her religion as an active communicant of The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, where she served on the Parish Board of Directors. Beth’s service to the church was recognized in 2018 when she was honored with receiving the prestigious Gartland Service Award.

Beth grew up riding and showing horses through her teenage years and rekindled her love of showing horses at age 60 and participated in several competitions. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, family and friends. A few of their favorite trips included Aspen, Scotland, Ireland, Paris, Provence, and of course, Notre Dame.

In addition to her parents, Beth was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Edward J Whelan, Jr.

Beth leaves behind her five sons, Edward J Whelan, III (Biddy), Timothy N. Whelan, Terence P. Whelan, Brian G. Whelan (Libby), Mathew J. Whelan (Ashley); 13 grandchildren, Edward J. Whelan, IV (Helena), Daisy Whelan Sullivant (Hank), Josh Whelan, Katie Whelan, Mariah Whelan, Timothy Whelan, Ryan Whelan (Georgia), Brian Whelan, Jr. (Lauren), Alexandra Whelan Balhoff (Kevin), Matthew Whelan, Prater Whelan, and Cullen Whelan; five great-grandchildren, Edward J. Whelan, V, Henry Sullivant, Monte Sullivant, Louis Sullivant, and Teddy Whelan, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends, all miss her dearly.

Dear Matt, I know we haven't seen each other since high-school but I remember your Mother like it was yesterday. Yesterday, most of the time I wish it were so. She was such a gracious lady. I spoke with Joe the day before your Mother's rosary. I truly tried to pay my respects but couldn't leave my father's bedside. Our Mother's never leave us.
