Grier V. Carter

Grier Valmore Carter, 65, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Emory University Medical Center in Atlanta. 

The Screven County native was born on February 15, 1958 to the late Edith Wade Sheppard Carter and Adolphus Jasper Carter, Jr. Grier was a longtime resident of Savannah and a 1976 graduate of Savannah High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.  Grier began his working career with Builderama, eventually moving to NCR where he retired as a Senior Field Engineer after 40 years of service. 

Grier developed a love for the outdoors that stayed with him throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing and had a great love for animals. Grier was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His greatest passion was his devotion to his beloved wife of 41 years, Ada, his children, and grandchildren. He was exceptionally proud and grateful for his family. 

In addition to his parents, Grier was predeceased by a sister, Meredith Waters Bacon.
Grier leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife,  Ada Hill Carter of Guyton; four children, Clayton D. Carter, Katie Carter Allen (Travis), Courtney Carter Freels (Elliott), and Calvin B. Carter (Wendy); nine grandchildren, Valin, Maria, and Alyssa Carter, Trent and Haley Kate Allen, Emma and Ethan Freels, and Mason and Madelyn Carter; two brothers, Adolphus “A.J.” J. Carter III and Joseph “Joe” Wade Carter; and a sister, Marlene Carter Emeott.

Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel on Sunday, February 26, 2023. The funeral service will immediately follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. A private burial will be held on Monday in Middleground Road Church Cemetery in Screven County.
