Passed away on February 18, 2023

Ralph

Ralph Vincent “Skip” Hinely, Jr., 70, known by his friends as “Skip”, passed away Saturday February 18, 2023 at Candler Hospital.  Skip was born September 1, 1952 in Savannah, GA to the late Ralph Vincent Hinely, Sr. and Laura Lindner Hinely.  He attended several churches around the Savannah area, to include, Cokesbury United Methodist Church, Islands Christian Church and Higher Ground Baptist Church.  Skip had a musical gift and shared his talent with his churches and many other places around Savannah, such as the Night Flight Café on River Street, the Hilton Head Resort, the Windjammer in Charleston, and went on a college circuit tour.  He had the honor and privilege to open for big artists like B.B. King and Tina Turner.  As a small child Skip played the drums, and then learned to play the guitar.  He eventually went on to play for several bands throughout his life, including the Original Roques, the Dynamic Deltas, the Deap Blue, Marble Fawn, the Grit Band, The Voyage Show, Radio Flyer, the Veraflames, and the Telfair Babies.  Skip also had a long career in finance, working as the Finance Director for J.C. Lewis, the Vaden Group, Fairway Lincoln Mercury and Group, and O.C. Welch, and also worked in sales at Portman’s Music Store.  He was the founder of Video Vision, a video store he started and worked in for many years with his family.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his son, Illya, and his close friend and music partner, Thad Strickland, who died just hours before him.

Skip is survived by his wife of 46 years, Becky McCranie Hinely, his three children, Victoria Hinely (Dave), Charles Hinely Sr., and Jeffery Hinely (Amber), his six grandchildren, Mandolin, Cassidy, Charles Jr., Angelique, Silas, and Sawyer.  Also surviving are his mother, Laura Hinely, his sister, Linda Price (Johnny), his brother, Barry Hinely (Tracey), sisters-in-law, Jean, Debbie, and Julie (Corey), several nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and his faithful companion, his dog, Freddie.

A Celebration of Skips life will be held Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. Higher Ground Baptist Church, 9120 Whitefield Ave, Savannah, GA 31406.

The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Becky, Laura, Barry and family: life consists of many pains, sorrows, disappointments, trials and tribulations, but it also consists of joy, love, friendship and family. Skip rose above the pain and sorrows, and with the help of a loving family and music, kept his head on straight and his path straight. His aspirations were always for goodness and heavenly pursuits. I know that he and Thad are now singing with the angel’s choir inside the Pearly Gates. I, for one, look forward to hearing him sing and play again. Stay the course. There are many mansions in Heaven. Love transcends time and space and abides eternal in the soul. It’s the only thing we can take with us, and Skip was blessed with an abundance of it! My love to all. May God grant you His peace beyond all understanding. David

Becky and Family, Skip was the epitome of a cousin who was more like a close brother. Many good memories of earlier days on Daffin Drive, where Skip would scare the heck out of us with his infamous UFO stories! I’ll always remember his music and the stories behind the music. Skip, I know you’re up there with Thad, playing music “Savannah Style “!

- Keith Dryden, Monroe, Georgia

- The Melton’s, Savannah, GA

I remember my cousin Skippy as a kind person. I remember he came to stay with my family in Decatur when I was a young girl. I remember he played drums. I think he was about 16 years old at the time. I remember his drum playing was amazing. As a young girl who had a tough time growing up, I felt a kind of kinship with my cousin Skippy, because I felt like he was going through something too. I still have a card with a picture of him and his fellow band members, The Deap Blue. My sincere sympathy goes out to Becky, Skippy's children, his mother Laura, his sister Linda, and his brother Barry. With Love, Donna
