Celebrating the life of

Edwin Bethea Henderson

April 06, 1944 - February 13, 2023

Edwin Bethea Henderson

Edwin Bethea Henderson passed away Monday, February 13, 2023 after a brief illness.

Born in Savannah, GA on April 6, 1944, Ed was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Clair A. Henderson.

Elected president of his Senior class, Ed graduated from Jenkins High School in 1962 and shortly after enlisted in the Navy, serving our country for two years. Afterwards, he attended and graduated from Georgia Southern University. Ed enjoyed a long career as a Jobber Representative with Amoco Oil Company until his retirement in 2001. Unable to stand still after he retired, he earned his real estate license and successfully sold property in Harris Neck, Georgia.

He served as President of the Board and was a member of the Home Association at Delta Plantation, where he resided with his wife, Ellen. An avid fisherman, he was an active member of the Coastal Conservation Association and The Barbour River Club.

Always the life of the party, Ed was well loved by all who knew him. With a twinkle in his eye, he was quick with a joke and a devoted friend who never met a stranger. He cared deeply about others and made it a point to always visit or pick up the phone to call friends and family no matter the occasion. Ed loved the saltwater and was happiest crabbing, fishing, shrimping and enjoying the landscape of the coastal marsh with his family on his Boston Whaler. He loved the Georgia Bulldogs and the beautiful sunsets at Delta Plantation. Ed always made sure that his children and grandchildren knew that he was proud and that they were loved, and he will be greatly missed.

Ed is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ellen Ulivo Henderson; daughters Helen Claire Henderson Smith (David Shepherd) and Emily Bethea Henderson; his two grandsons, Richard Riley Smith III and Henderson Briggs Smith and his beloved Boykin Spaniel, Fern.

In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his brother, Al Henderson.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, followed by a Rosary service beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023 in Greenwich Cemetery.

A candle has been lit!

Oh my goodness! We have lost a true "original", never to be duplicated again. Everybody loved Ed as he brought a smile and laughter everywhere he went. The good times that we had are too many to mention, but the numerous prank phone calls, before there was caller ID were hysterical and would have everybody in the room bent over, doubled with laughter!!! The remembrance of those calls brings a laugh to this day. I also recall a ride in a police car from Bell's Landing after attending a party with Ed (Ellen) must have been in Athens. When I think of Ed, it is always thoughts of good times, a kind soul, and a happy man! I know there is a celebration going on in heaven with Ed and those that have gone before him. Ellen, I am heartbroken for you and your precious girls and grandsons, and I am sending prayers, much love and sympathy for all of you.
