Charles Barry Spillane, Sr.

Mr. Charles Barry Spillane, Sr., 89, of Savannah, passed away Friday, January 27, 2023, surrounded by his family. If anyone knew the meaning of happiness, family and love, it was Charlie. He was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a great friend. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a skip in his step, and a smile that drew you in.

Charles Barry Spillane, Sr. was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1933. Shortly afterwards his family made Savannah their home. He loved the beach, and was a resident at Tybee Island for 28 years. Charlie also loved playing the piano and writing songs. He is mostly known for his song, "It's Time to Fall in Love", recorded by Kenny Palmer. He loved soccer and was a coach for Blessed Sacrament School, and Benedictine Military School.

Charlie graduated high school at Benedictine Military School in 1951. From there he received a BS in accounting from the University of North Carolina in 1957, and went on to serve his country in the US Navy for four years during the Korean Conflict. When he returned home to Savannah, Charlie joined his father working for Spillane, Rhodes, Lebay, Cann and Sieg.

Eventually, Charlie left his Dad's practice and opened up Charles B. Spillane & Company which was in operation for 55 years.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda M. Hayner, his son Charles B. Spillane, Jr., (Margaret M. Spillane), his daugter, Janet E. Spillane (Jon C. Erickson), his granddaughter, Jennifer E. Lujan (Carlos R. Lujan), his grandson, Charles B. Spillane III, his great-grandchildren, Alexis B. Spillane, Lane R. Lujan, Liam R. Lujan, Carolina M. Lujan, and Bach Dinh. Hodges, Jessica Hein, Lindsay Hein, James Dinh, his stepdaughter, Deedee Warlick (Randy Warlick), his stepson, Robert Hayner (Beth Hayner), and step-grandchildren, Griffyn Hayner and Jameson Hayner.

I remember Mr.Spillian as a true southern gentleman. Colorful in his dress attire and causal in his demeanor. Always approachable and he never forgot a name.I always enjoyed him when he would visit Charlie at the dealership then a short time later as his client. Farewell Mr.Spillian, until we meet again! God bless the Spillian family.

We are saddened to hear about Mr. Spillane’s death. His was certainly a full and productive life. We have fond memories of him as we believe the DeRenne apartment that we rented from him, for our daughter, a SCAD student from 2007-2011, literally came from heaven. When in Savannah as we are this weekend, we fondly stop by the DeRenne, and think of Charlie. Mr. Spillane was cheerful, gracious, and the epitome of Southern manners and style. Our sincere condolences to the family, and please be assured of our prayers.
