Herschel Wayne Lucas

Herschel Wayne Lucas 6/6/1947 – 1/27/2023 - “Wayne” Lucas, age 75 passed away Friday January 27, 2023 after a short illness.

Wayne was born June 6, 1947 to the late Herschel D. and Ruby Lucas of Savannah, GA.  He was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple.  Wayne attended Savannah High School for a couple years before moving to Arlington, VA and graduating from Washington-Lee High School in 1965.   Wayne graduated from the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at The University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism in 1969.   He then joined the United States Navy in 1970 where he met his wife Janet and served in Brooklyn, New York and in Norfolk, VA and ultimately in Sicily, Naval Air Station Sigonella.

Wayne returned home to Savannah, GA in 1974 and began working as a copy editor at The Savannah Morning News Evening Press thru the early 80’s.  He loved Savannah history and was an avid collector of fine antiques and many other unique collectibles.  Wayne was a skilled refinisher of antiques and spent years lending his talents to The Furniture Doctor, The Antiques Mall and countless Estate Sales.  Wayne was extremely passionate about his Georgia Bulldogs and it would be difficult to find a bigger Georgia Bulldogs memorabilia collector and fan.   He also loved the Atlanta Braves and NASCAR.   He was an accomplished photographer, an avid bird watcher, a creative poet and a great singer.

Wayne is preceded in death by his father Herschel Downing Lucas and his mother Ruby Lucas Lanier, his sister Joan Elizabeth Stanley, brother-in-law Robert Stanley, and his beautiful niece Elizabeth (Beth) Stanley Hendrix.  Wayne is survived by his loving wife Janet Lucas and loving pup Tatum, his son John (Caroline) Lucas, his daughter Angela (Scotty) Snipes and their daughter Sarah Snipes and his cousins who were like brothers, Gary Bridges, Donald (Wanda) Bridges, Bruce (Gwen) Bridges and loving nephew Glenn (Vicky) Stanley as well as many other family members and friends.
