Celebrating the life of

Jon Richard Bentz

January 25, 1961 - December 03, 2022

Jon Richard Bentz

Jon Richard Bentz, 61, a proud veteran of the United States Navy, passed away on Saturday December 3, 2022, in Savannah Georgia.

Jon was born on January 25, 1961, in Scottdale Pennsylvania and attended South Moreland High School, graduating in 1978.

At the age of 17, Jon enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Corpsman for almost 10 years.  Jon valued his service highly and loved his country.

Jon was a man who liked to take it easy.  He didn’t see the need to make a big deal of anything that should be easy and straightforward.  He had a great sense of humor and a very quick wit. Jon was a wealth of knowledge on so many things.  He would talk to for hours if you let him.  Being from Pennsylvania Jon was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and a University of Pittsburgh fan.  He was persuaded later in life, to become an Alabama Crimson Tide fan also.

Jon was preceded in death by his father John Richard Bentz and his mothers Theresa Jackamonis Bentz and Marjorie Bentz.

Jon is survived by his wife Norma Frances ‘Fran’ Bentz and his four children Doug Bentz (Celeste), Adam Bentz,  Jackson Keith Whitaker (Rachel)  and  Frances Faithe Johnson  (Phillip), his brothers Nicholas Marinnuci (Wendy), and Mark Bentz and his sisters Deborah Cavalier (Robert) and Jacque Marinucci Charles and multiple cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.  Jon had a special love for his grandchildren - Demien Bentz, Robert Fischer Johnson, and Nora Monroe Whitaker.

A committal service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday 7 December 2022 at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Flowers can be sent to Fox and Weeks 4605 US Highway 80 E, Savannah, GA 31410

I've been a newspaper reportee nearly 30 years and worked with Jon at The Daily Times. I thought of him at random today and looked him up out of curiosity. So sorry to read that he's passed. He was a joy to work with because he would literally jump out of his chair and go after a story. I remember our editor Bill See saying, "I like that guy's attitude. Grab yor b----- and go." That's what made me think of him today. I also was fond of his colorful expressions. Sitting next to Jon, I'd hear him say things like, "Oh man, I feel like I swallowed a lit cigar." RIP
