Celebrating the life of

Susan Thrash

March 14, 1946 - November 16, 2022

Susan Thrash

Susan Gillenwater Thrash, 76, of Wilmington Island, passed away unexpectedly November 14.

Born in Saltville, Virginia, on March 14, 1946 to Mack and Bernice Gillenwater, she grew up in Marion and Bristol, VA, graduating from Virginia High School and later Virginia Intermont College, with a degree in art.

She married Leland “Slick” Thrash in 1966 and shortly thereafter they moved to Savannah. Susan became well known in the community through jobs at Armstrong State College and Robinson-Humphrey, and she was a member of the Savannah Jaycettes. She and Slick were active in social and charitable organizations and made good friends on Wilmington Island and beyond. In the last several years, Susan’s presence as everyone’s “Mom” and assistant manager at Cheers to You was a community fixture. She was a lover of people and animals, always had a smile to share and a hand to lend, and will be greatly missed.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 47 years. She is survived by her sons, Shawn (Lee) Thrash, Acworth, GA, and Shane (Suzanna) Thrash, Bluffton, SC, her dear sister, Jane Camp, of Clifton, VA, and five grandchildren: Alex, Kate, Hailey, Alexis, and Isabella. She most loved being Gammy/Grandma to them. She also leaves behind several devoted cousins, nieces and nephews in Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina, as well as friends in Bristol and Marion.

The family is grateful to Susan’s close friends in Savannah who have been so good to her, particularly Sherry Leech Crawford, and her Cheers family.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 3, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church. Private burial will take place at Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society for Greater Savannah.
