Celebrating the life of

Dennis Joseph Hutton

February 18, 1946 - August 07, 2022

Dennis Joseph Hutton

Dennis Joseph Hutton entered into eternal rest peacefully on August 7, 2022 surrounded by loved ones after 76 years of a life well lived. His love of family, friends, hard work and travel will never be forgotten.

Dennis, affectionately known as Poke to some and as Papa Poke to his 14 grandchildren, is preceded in death by his mother and father, Marguerite and Joseph Hutton, and his brother Chris Hutton. Poke is survived by five siblings: Joseph Hutton (Eileen), Susan Hutton, John Hutton (Jeanne), Greg Hutton (Sandy), and Mary Gilker (Paul); and four children: Shiloh Hutton (Amber), Erin Sheldon (Chris), Bless Dollander (Chad), and Colleen Jama (Jaime). Papa Poke’s 14 grandchildren adored him for his towering presence and his willingness to be where they were, either on the sunny, hot sidelines of games or at a table with a fabulous meal ending in dessert.

Dennis loved his work with Healthy Savannah, Savannah Urban Garden Alliance, Mixed Greens and the Forsyth Farmers Market because of the community of friends he was so fond of. His giving spirit will live on through the many ways he touched our lives and we hope the same for all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a flower or a tree, donating to an organization that Dennis enjoyed working with or supporting a locally owned business.

The family invites you to a Celebration of Life on Thursday, August 11 at 6:30 pm behind Savannah Victory Gardens at 2500 Tennessee Avenue, 31404.

Uncle Poke was always a powerful force when I saw him. He was so large and had a voice that rumbled but was as gentle as can be, much like his brother Chris. Rest in peace Pokey. May your spirit live on in all of us!

Let me rise with the Angel Through the rays of the Sun Let me fly from this mountain When my troubles are done May we swim the Great River On our journey back home May we rise like the Angel Sail away, and be gone…

- Michael roach , Tybee Island , Ga

I knew the 18 yr old lanky boy who held my hand during our innocent teenage years in Savannah. After Berkley we had adventures, including meals with amazing friends, passionate political rants, hitchhiking cross country twice to see our families, all of it ending abruptly when he chose Canada over Vietnam. With gratitude for being deeply enriched by his love, I join you in sorrow for the loss of this gentle human being. Please share your stories with me. Mary Jane "Mij" Shippen in Santa Monica CA 4248326072 Thank you, Jeanne, for returning my call.
