Wilhelmina D. Benton

Wilhelmina Durden Benton, 104, of Bluffton, SC, and Savannah, GA passed to her heavenly reward early July 6, 2022.  She was predeceased by her husband Joseph W. Benton, Sr., her son Roger F. Benton, and her 5 siblings.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy B. Hutson and Jean Fasano.  She had four grandsons, Matt Hutson (Priscilla), David Hutson (Valentina), Jason Hutson (Stacey), and Mikey Fasano; great-granddaughter Harmony and great-grandson Daniil.

She was the oldest of six.  She attended Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, SC from 1932 until her graduation in 1937.  She moved to Savannah, GA where she met and married her husband in 1939.

A dedicated mother, she always volunteered at school when needed for any event involving her children.  Her home was often filled with neighborhood children and friends who loved to be around her.  She loved poetry and could quote numerous poems she learned throughout her school years.  Her creativity manifested in her garden club where she often won prizes for her outstanding arrangements.  She always put others first.  She was humble, loving, thoughtful, and she had a witty sense of humor enjoyed by all ages, from small children to adults.

Dear Nini…. My precious grandmother. You amaze me beyond measure. You are so unselfish to wait for Harmony and I to see you before receiving your heavenly reward. What sacrifice and love and that sweet spirit you have I will cherish every day. Thank you for letting me wear my socks while taking a bath as a little boy. I can remember you pouring water out of a pot to rinse my hair. I still tell Harmony the same things you taught me like covering feet and chest in the winter to avoid getting a cold. As we spoke the day before you passed I look forward to sharing a BLT with you in your mansion in heaven. You are in my thoughts every day. Thank you Mom and aunt Jean for taking care of my precious grandmother! Many thanks for the wonderful nurses at Amedisys that tended to my grandmothers care.

No one could have asked for a better grandmother. She always put others first and would make sure she could do anything she could do for you. I cant remember ever seeing her in a negative way and she always had a positive outlook on every situation. I'll always cherish the memories of her watching me when I was younger instead of going to summer camps or after school care and the walks we would take to the store or the park. She lived an amazing life and touched so many people throughout her years. Nini, you will always be in our thoughts and memories every day.
