Celebrating the life of

Janet Newberry Erickson

April 24, 1952 - July 04, 2022

Janet Newberry Erickson

Janet Priscilla Newberry Erickson passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on July 4, 2022.

She was born in Donalsonville, Georgia April 24, 1952. After later moving to Savannah, she married Eric and they lived and raised their children in Bellinger Hill, SC. She worked for many years and retired from the accounting office of the Chatham County Department of Family and Children Services. Many who knew her remember her dedication to fostering her son and daughter’s interest in the theater. She spent many nights at the Savannah Theater, City Lights Theater, the Cultural Arts Center, and many other venues while her children rehearsed and performed. She took great pride in creating the Savannah Theater Guild, through which she raised money to renovate the interior and restore the iconic marquis out front. She also spent many years working on her arts and crafts hobby and enjoyed running a booth at countless fairs in the area.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Betty Jo Newberry, and by her husband, Theodore “Eric” Woodrow Erickson, Jr.

Janet is survived by a son, Jonathan Patrick King (Glenn); a daughter Margaret Priscilla Erickson Cowart (Roger); two grandsons, Preston Louis Cowart and Theodore Wilson Cowart; a sister, Glenda “Dink” Newberry Weed; a stepson, Theodore “Ty” Woodrow Erickson, III; two step-grandchildren, Alexis Bailey Erickson and Eric Walker Erickson; a nephew, Joseph “Joey” Dunning Weed, III; a niece, Florence Eliza “Liza” Weed; and several great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Bonaventure Cemetery on Monday, July 18, 2022, at 10:00 AM with Reverend Billy Hester of Asbury Memorial Church officiating.

My heart goes out to Patrick & Priscilla over the loss of Janet. I have wonderful memories of her, and even as a child I saw the love she had for her children and Uncle Eric. We had so many happy times all together at Hall Island, and so much fun at the Christmas parties she & Uncle Eric had. I always think about them when I hear Elvis' "Blue Christmas". Sending so much love your way.

I am so sorry to read of Janet's passing. We worked together at Chatham Co. Dept. of Family and Children Services. As a socia; worker who knew little of the accounting side of the work we did with the families and children we served, she taught me much - always with great patience and a generous smile to go along with it. She will be missed.

- Debbie Bennett, Savannah, Georgia

Janet and I both worked for Chatham County DFCS, although in different departments, so I didn't know how well. But I do know that she was a hard worker and had a sharp mind for finances. She was kind and always willing to help someone else. What I remember most about Janet was how much she loved her children and how proud she was of them. I know you will miss her dearly. My prayer is that you take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her beloved husband and they are at peace in the arms of our Lord.
