Shirley Leech New

Shirley Leech New died June 21, 2022 at age 87.  She died at home in Savannah GA after a long illness surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter Landrum (Landy) New, Sr., son Walter L. New Jr., her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Paul H. Leech, her sister, Paula McAbee of Hilton Head, S.C and her brother Richard Leech of Richmond Hill, GA.

She was born in Florence, Alabama in 1934 and moved to Savannah when she was in the fifth grade. She attended public schools in Savannah and graduated from Savannah High School in 1952.  She graduated from the University of Florida in 1956.  She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority at Florida and enjoyed the reunions for the past 20 years. She received her Masters from Armstrong/Savannah State Joint Graduate program and her Educational Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern University.  She taught at Sol C. Johnson High School for twenty-nine years and retired in 1999.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Savannah and Wilmington Island Club. She loved sitting on her deck waving to the boats on Richardson Creek and looking at her beautiful oak tree.

Survivors: Steven Cubbedge New and wife, Dee Dee of Durham, North Carolina; and daughter, Diane G. New and Jan Allee of Savannah and her loving and faithful dog Cookie.  She is also survived by her granddaughter, Shaina Diane New Victory her husband Jason Victory and 3 great grandchildren of Denver, NC.; her brother-in-law, Ira Benjamin New, Jr. and wife of Aiken, S.C.; her cousins-in-law Marion H. Kennickell, Jr. and wife, Rose along with several nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to Nicole Brown, Ken Kennickell and Dana Rowell for all the love and support they provided Shirley during her illness.

A celebration of Landy and Shirley’s life together will be held at a later date with family and close friends.

Remembrances: In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice, First Baptist Church of Savannah, P.O. Box 9551 GA 31412-9551 or a charity of your choice.

I was so sorry to learn of Mrs. New's passing. She taught me typing at Johnson '76 & '77. She was absolutely my favorite teacher during my high school career. Prayers for her family during this difficult time.
