Celebrating the life of

Margaret Eloise Hendrix Daly

Passed away on June 05, 2022

Margaret Eloise Hendrix Daly

Margaret Eloise Hendrix Daly, 87, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 5, 2022, following an extended illness. She was born in Savannah, the oldest daughter of the late Benjamin Atwood Hendrix and Mary Thomas Hendrix Strickland, and was a proud descendent of the historic Salzburgers who settled in Ebenezer, GA in the early 1700s.

While attending Commercial High School and cheerleading for the Cobras, Margaret met the love of her life, James A. Daly, Jr.  The high school sweethearts married in 1954, and soon became partners in life and business.  In 1968, Jim joined with Gerald Pollack, to form Pollack and Daly Photography. Meticulously organized and with a natural business acumen, Margaret embraced innumerable behind-the-scenes responsibilities – from bookkeeping and scheduling to serving as Jim’s on-site photography assistant – holding lights, posing wedding parties, and serving as the official “bridal gown fluffer.”  In 1989, Margaret and Jim started Jim Daly Photography, working tirelessly together until their retirement in 2000.

Margaret’s definition of retirement led to the purchase of Seaweed's Snow Cones on Tybee Island, which she and Jim seasonally operated in the early 2000s. The business delighted her grandchildren to no end, and Margaret enjoyed meeting Tybee visitors from all over the world. Decades earlier, Margaret also supported her son’s Daly float rental business on Tybee, serving as self-appointed sentry for wayward floats that drifted too far away.

A faithful Catholic, Margaret attended St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish.  She enjoyed a passion for animals and gardening, and was a member of the Wilmington Island Garden Club and Red Hat Society.  Margaret maintained one of the most impeccable yards on Wilmington Island (in part due to her rumored proclivity for tossing fallen pinecones from her trees into her son’s next door yard).

Affectionately known as "Nannie," Margaret was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend, and will be deeply missed. She loved her family and strived always to make sure they were well cared for. One of Margaret’s joys was hosting gatherings for family and friends – her post-St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Christmas Eve Midnight Mass potlucks were legendary, as were her Sunday night picnics at the beach house.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James A. Daly, Jr. and is survived by her younger sister and dearest friend Betty Stephens; beloved children, Kathy Daly Salter (Steve), Dr. James A. Daly III (Lake), Dr. Dale P. Daly (Susan), all of Savannah; her eight grandchildren - Jonathan Salter (Anna), Madison Daly, James Daly IV (Olivia), Louisa Daly, Kate Daly, Hannah Daly, Jack Daly, Sam Daly and great-granddaughter Elizabeth Lake Carbo, who each brought infinite joy to her life; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and her cherished cat Rudy, Margaret’s steadfast companion for more than 14 years.

Visitation will be held starting at 5:00 p.m. with a vigil starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.  A Mass of Christian Burial is planned later in the summer for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16 at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church on Tybee Island. An inurnment ceremony will be held at the Greenwich Cemetery Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites remembrances for:  Benedictine Military School, 6502 Seawright Dr., Savannah, GA 31406; or, The Fresh Air Home on Tybee, P.O. Box 14144, Savannah, GA 31416.
