Celebrating the life of

Emil Nathaniel Kemp

May 28, 1957 - May 09, 2022

Emil Nathaniel Kemp

Emil Nathaniel Kemp, “Stoney”, was born on May 28, 1957 in Washington D.C., but was raised in Savannah, Georgia in the historic Sandfly Community by his parents, the late Laversa and Louis O’Neal.

Stoney received his early childhood and middle school education in the segregated Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah in the early to late 1960s to the 1970s.  He would later attend and graduate from Benedictine Military School in 1975.  Here, Stoney was a member of the Cadet Football and Basketball teams.

After graduating from Benedictine, Stoney attended the then Tuskegee Institute on a ROTC Scholarship.  He was a member of the Choir, the ROTC, and many other campus organizations.  He was most proud of becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.  Stoney was initiated in the Gamma Epsilon Chapter in the Fall of 1976, The Diamond Crusaders.  He was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Upon graduating from Tuskegee in 1979, Stoney was commissioned into the United States Army.  Captain Kemp served honorably in the Infantry Branch for six years in various capacities stateside and abroad.  He completed his years of civil service by working twenty-six years as a United States Postal Service supervisor in Columbia, SC.  Stoney oversaw the sorting out and organizing of incoming and outgoing mail, parcels and freight deliveries.  During his time in South Carolina, he joined Prince Hall Freemasonry of South Carolina.

Instead of “taking it easy” after retiring from the USPS, he started to work in several security positions.   He was an officer for the Long Cove Club on Hilton Head Island, SC.  On his days off, he would serve as a substitute teacher in the Beaufort County School District in South Carolina and the Liberty County School System in Hinesville, GA.  In 2015, he served as an Assistant football coach at Midway Middle School under Head Coach Quillie Jones. The Panthers’ Football team were undefeated, a perfect 10 and 0.  In 2018, He started his own personal security company, Attention To Detail Personal Services.

On December 31, 2013, Emil married the love of his life, Shannon McFadden, whom he met at his family’s church, Speedwell United Methodist, where he was a faithful and loyal member of the Choir, the Men’s Choir, and a member of The Board of Trustees.

Stoney was very passionate about helping the American Veterans.  He was very active in the local Disable American Veteran (DAV) local chapter in Savannah, Chapter 8, and in the Department of Georgia DAV serving in several leadership positions.  He was elected as Commander for the DAV, Department of Georgia in June 2021.

Stoney enjoyed life!  He was an avid golfer, boatsman, fisherman, world traveler and a life-long fan of the Washington Football team.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 8 years, Shannon McFadden-Kemp, a beloved son, Joseph Nathaniel Kemp, and a host of special aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, God children, and close friends.

A wake will be held on Thursday, May 19, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Speedwell United Methodist Church on Skidaway Road at Montgomery Crossroad.

A graveside service and burial, with military honors, will be on Friday, May 20, at 10:00 a.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Sending words of comfort to Shannon, Joseph, and family. There are so many of us from the Tuskegee family who remember Stoney fondly… whether as a classmate, or choir member… or from the ROTC, fraternities or sororities. Stoney was a popular and fun-loving guy who never met a stranger. It’s wonderful to see that he carried that zest for life till the end. God bless you! Cynthia Whittaker & AKA Sorors, Spring ‘78
