Miriam Jean Barber Carter
February 07, 1929 - May 20, 2018
Miriam Jean Barber Carter, 89 passed away quietly, with her family by her side, on Sunday May 20th, 2018 at home under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Born in Savannah, Georgia she was the daughter of the late Ernest L. Barber, Sr. and Gussie Mae Barber. She graduated from Commercial High School in 1947.
Known as “Miss Jean”, she was a charter member of Savannah Christian Church where she served for many years as Children’s and Youth Director and as Secretary to the Pastor. She also worked for nine years until retirement as Secretary at White Bluff United Methodist Church.
After retiring she volunteered at White Bluff Elementary School and South Effingham Elementary Schools where she was known as “the book doctor”.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Elton Lee Carter; son, John Stephen Carter, and brother Ernest L. Barber Jr.(Miriam).
Survivors include her daughter, Janice Carter McKim, son, James Carter (Vicki) grandsons Patrick and Jason Carter, several nephews and nieces as well as her best friend Doris McKinney.
The family will receive visitors from 5-7pm on Tuesday May 22nd at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel. A Graveside service will be at 11am on Wednesday, May 23rd at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Compassion Christian Church, Mission Program, 55 Al Henderson Blvd., Savannah, GA 31419.
