Celebrating the life of

Joseph W. "Jody" Oetgen, Jr.

August 12, 1956 - January 27, 2022

Joseph W.

Joseph William “Jody” Oetgen, Jr., age 65, passed away on January 27, 2022 at Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA with his mother Sarah at his side.

In addition to his mother, Sarah Oetgen of Savannah, Jody is survived by his Brother William Eugene “Gene” Oetgen of Savannah; his niece Tori (Phillip) Campbell and great nephews Grant and Miles Campbell of Atlanta; and numerous cousins. He is preceded in death by his father Joseph William Oetgen, Sr.; cousin Dick Oetgen; Aunts Frances Henderson, Diane Strickland, and Margerite Arnett; and his Grandparents Alec and Mamie Ford, Walter and Pansy Oetgen.

Jody was born August 12, 1956 in Savannah at the old Telfaire Hospital.  While he was born with cerebral palsy, he lived a wonderful life with his family who cared for him very much. He attended grade school in Augusta, GA where his teacher, Ms. Emily Self, said one of the greatest joys of her teaching career was when she realized she had taught Jody to read. He participated in the special olympics during school where he won several awards with his power wheelchair.  He spent many happy days in Augusta with his best friend Bud Wardlaw and their mothers Billie and Sarah remain close friends to this day.  Jody and his family moved to Atlanta in 1980 where he attended the REACH center (now the Frazer Center) where he learned to use an electronic voice communicator which changed his life forever. He was devoted to his Christian faith and a charter member of Advent Lutheran Church in Augusta, GA. He attended St. Michael's Lutheran church while residing in Tucker, GA for 20 years. When he and his parents later returned to Savannah in 1999 they joined the Lutheran Church of the Ascension followed by the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Wilmington Island.

Jody enjoyed painting ceramics and learned to paint many kissing angels which he gave to people for gifts.  He cherished spending time with his friends and family and cheering on the Atlanta Braves.  He will be greatly missed, but we know that he is happy now in heaven.   Jody will be buried beside his father Joe at Hillcrest East Cemetery with a graveside service at a later date to be announced.

A joint graveside service for Jody and his mother Sarah will be held Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 2pm at Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery.
