Celebrating the life of

Bonnie Sue Hosti

October 01, 1952 - January 01, 2022

Bonnie Sue Hosti

Bonnie Sue Hosti passed away on January 1, 2022 at her home on Tybee Island with her husband and daughter at her side. Bonnie was born on October 1, 1952 in Savannah, GA to George and Faye Hosti. She attended St. James School, St. Vincent’s Academy, and the University of Georgia. She was married to Norbert Chandler for forty-four years. They lived at Tybee Island.

Bonnie was a speech pathologist with the Chatham County Board of Education for thirty years, with the majority of her career spent at May Howard Elementary School. She loved her work and her students. She loved the outdoors, especially kayaking, boating, biking, and walking on the beach and in the woods-anywhere she could feel the beauty of nature. She was an integral part of the Tybee community. Her friends and family have lost a kind soul who was known as a giving and loving person.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Norbert Chandler, her daughter, Kelsey Hosti Chandler, her son-in-law John Anagnost. She is also survived by her sister Helen Hosti and brother-in-law John Etheridge of Winterville, Georgia, as well as numerous cousins and dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Faye Hosti, also of Tybee Island, with whom she shared an extremely close relationship. Their example of love, resilience, and compassion remained a constant influence throughout her life.

A private graveside service will be held in Bonaventure Cemetery with a celebration of life to follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org.

She was the best friend to so many. She was a loving and devoted mother and sister. She was an excellent sailor. The crew will pay honor and tribute to our dear friend with the ringing of eight bells and the laying of roses upon the flow of the ebbing tide and rising moon. Norbert, I was stunned this morning to read of Bonnie's passing. I am so sorry. You were truly blessed to have each other for so many years. Your love for and devotion to Bonnie was emphasized to me when we worked together and you were asked why you didn't want to go out with "the boys". Your response, which has stuck with me for all these years was, "I'm not married to the boys." I'm happy that you and Kelsey have each other for comfort.

- Patrick Martin, Richmond Hill, GA

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Bonnie. I was fortunate to have known her from May Howard School. She was such at kind and caring colleague who was always so dedicated to her students. Every year she would find me to give me the clothes that her daughter had out grown because she knew that I as a School Social Worker I would know of children who could use them. It was a joy to run into her in the years after we had both retired. That was every year on St Patrick’s Day at Calhoun Square and often at the many outdoor musical events we are so lucky to have in Savannah. Whenever I saw her, the love she had for her family and friends and her kindness to everyone was always so apparent There will be less joy in our community without her. Rest In Peace, sweet Bonnie. I will play for peace for your family and friends.

- Julie Watson, Savannah , Ga

Bonnie was most assuredly a kind soul who did leave behind lots of love to each of us. She definitely brought joy to others. She and her spirit will be missed by everyone who had the fortune of sharing her time here on earth. May we find comfort and happiness in our fond memories of Sweet Bonnie.

- Karleen and Vincent Grevemberg, SAVANNAH, GA

Bonnie was a huge part of our daughter’s success with her speech device. She made it possible for her to attend a special camp and accompanied her on a trip to Colorado for a national program. She was a major part of her life at May Howard and a huge reason for her happiness in school. Lindsey had severe cerebral palsy and was non verbal. But not in Bonnie’s eyes. She was determined that Lindsey would be able to communicate with others and because of Bonnie’s determination Lindsey was successful. Lindsey passed away in August at 35 years of age and I’m sure she and Bonnie have connected again. Our love and prayers are with you all

- Donna and Jon Hart, Savannah , GA

I’m just now learning of Bonnie’s passing and my heart goes out to her family and friends. I had the privilege of working with Bonnie at May Howard and observing her love for the students she served. As a teacher, Bonnie was a natural; it was her calling. Always a team player, never an unkind word, always willing to offer support, totally organized, devoted to her students, an unparalleled example of teaching at its best and a blessing to have on staff. It was truly a joy to work with her. At this sad time, my prayer is that the peace of our Lord and Savior will abide with you now and in the days to come. Lillian Akins

Our world has lost such a special person who always had a smile on her face. I met her 35 years ago while working as the Lead for SLPs. She was so helpful & supportive to me as an outsider to the Savannah-Chatham schools. Bonnie was an outstanding clinician who also shared her time and talents with students from Armstrong State University. I was lucky to keep in touch with her over the years when we reconnected at various Tybee events. I will definitely miss her and my heart & prayers go out to Norbert, Kelsey & family.

- Conni Wambold, Savannah, GA

Norbert, I'm deeply saddened to learn of Bonnie's passing. I've been thinking about the time I met here. She was kayaking back behind Little Tybee with a friend and I was kayaking as well. I kept hearing this person talk about Norbert this and Norbert that. And I thought, "There can't be that many Norberts around Tybee" so I asked her if she was talking about you and she was. Such a nice and friendly person and I enjoyed knowing her through the years. May God walk with you in this time of grieving. Sincerely, Geoff

- Geoff Bowden, Savannah, GA
