Martha Turner Watson, 43, was lost unexpectedly on December 30, 2021, leaving a legacy of uncommon strength and determination that will always be remembered by her family and friends.

Born on September 30, 1978, in Savannah, Ga., she is survived by her wife, Melissa Turner, her children, Haley, Turner, Caroline and Connor; their father, William Watson, III; Melissa’s children, Grace and Claire; her mother, Martha Youmans (Bill); her brother, Stephen E. Weeks, III, (Ruth), her sister, Julie Farmer (Ben); her brother-in-law, Charles Warren; her nieces and nephews, Grace, Maggie, Jack, Hugh, Charlie (Melissa), Lance (Tiffany) and Lysa; as well as beloved family friend, Martha Tillman. She was preceded in death by her father, Jay R. Turner, her sister, Jan Warren, and her grandparents, Hilma S. Traver and Jack Traver and James Turner and Alice Turner of Middlesboro, Kentucky.

She lived her life on her own terms, and she resolutely refused to be limited by labels or conventions she didn’t believe applied to her. Wherever she went, she was fully and unapologetically herself.

Above all else, she was a mother who loved her children fiercely, supporting and celebrating them every day of their lives. Since the day her oldest child, Haley, was born and every day afterward, Martha lived her life with and for her children, creating a home with Melissa with open doors where every day felt like an event and everyone was welcome. At every game, every graduation, every birthday party and every holiday, she was an unmistakable presence for her children.

She was also a devoted, loyal and generous friend who travelled easily in and between many circles, her authenticity endearing her to everyone she met. Her smirk, raised eyebrows and razor sharp sarcasm will be missed by everyone who loved her, knew her and laughed with her.

A 1997 graduate of Savannah Country Day School, Martha was one of the best basketball players in the school’s history. She still holds the school record for most made 3-pointers and led teams that advanced to the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8 of the state playoffs. But her athletic career was far more than statistics – from an early age, she electrified her family, her teammates, her coaches and occasionally even her opponents by playing with a precocious flair that could never be anticipated or imitated.

Martha will be remembered as a unique spirit who loved being on the water and in the backyard, and she will be remembered as a mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend whose actions always expressed her deep devotion the people fortunate enough to be close to her.

Visitation will take place from 12-2 pm on Tuesday at the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive followed by a funeral service in the Hodgson Chapel beginning at 2 pm.

Please consider making a contribution to CURE Childhood Cancer in Martha’s honor at www.curechildhoodcancer.org.

I have not known your family long. I did not know your family well. But what I knew was this was a family where "family" truly meant something. There was so much love and support there. During Haley's time at Memorial Day School - grandmother, uncle, aunt sister, brother and their friends supported Haley and supported our school. We were blessed to go the Wason home for Haley's graduation and were treated like we had been a part of the family for years. I was in shock when I received a call and my heart broke for Haley, Turner, Caroline and Connor. I will and Memoriald Day School will always be here for your family. Rest in Peace knowing how much love there is in this community for you and your family.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of the unexpected and untimely death of Martha. I knew Martha while growing up in Savannah. We attended different high schools, and I can certainly attest to her tremendous athletic ability, as I and my school were the unfortunate recipients many of times. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers, and may God be with each of you and give you His amazing grace and strength. Much love, Katie Crawford Wynne

I thought that I was living a life on my own terms in a bubble until I met Martha. I don’t know how we even evolved into the closest of friends because I don’t remember me without her. When I met Martha I met someone as silly, quirky, fun, loved with her whole heart, and was the best mom and wife ever. Martha made going to the gas station fun! We traveled to many places, shared heartfelt stories, and we never had a bad time even when I cried she made me laugh. My life will never be the same without Martha, but her love, fun spirit, and passion for life will always shine on in Haley, Turner, and Caroline. I am blessed for having known such a wonderful woman. Martha changed my life for the better. I will take what I learned from her and keep on being my silly self always looking for a side-eye glance. I will always love and miss you. I will see you again my sweet friend.

Martha, it is so rare to meet a person who automatically clicks with not only you but with your whole family and one who shares their family as well. That happened for us, I could always count on you to look after Fenn and never once did I worry! I will always remember when you took Fenn tubing and she tried to lie at 9! I could also always count on you picking on me for being a helicopter mom, I actually changed from knowing you! I'm going to miss our conversations and seeing you. Joe and I will always be there for Caroline, Turner, and Haley! We will try to keep the sass from C down for M! Fly high!

Martha always brought a smile to my face every time I saw her. She could take a joke just as well as she could give one and boy could she give one. I know her son Turner personally. I consider him to be one of the finest young men that I know. I don’t know her daughters but judging by Turner I know that they must be fine young ladies. When she talked about her children you could tell that she was very proud of them. May God give them strength and may she rest in peace
