Shirley Marguerite Mehrens Rice

Shirley Marguerite Mehrens Rice, 100, passed away on Christmas morning at Buckingham South.  She was born in Ft. Calhoun, NB, daughter of Henry A. and Marguerite Ketchmark Mehrens. 

Mrs. Rice met and married her future husband, Richard L. Rice. a student attending Creighton University Law School, in 1948.  Mrs. Rice was a graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Nursing.   She was a registered nurse for many years having worked at the University Hospital in Augusta GA, Walton Army Hospital in Fort Dix, NJ, Moody Nursing Home in Decatur GA.  While stationed at various military bases with her husband, she taught catechism and served as an officer’s wife in various capacities.  She moved to Savannah in 1978 and was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church, a tutor at St. James Catholic School for over 15 years and volunteered to feed the hungry at various charitable organizations in Savannah GA.  Her great passion was playing bridge.  The first place she inquired about after moving from base to base before anything, was where can I play bridge.

Surviving are her children, Susan Rice (Mike Sheppard) and Richard Rice (Jean); grandchildren, Jessica Futrell (Bryn), Zachary Woods (Jennifer), John Michael Cunard, Jr., Michelle Smith (Scott), Christine Sheppard, Paula Sheppard, Stephanie Sheppard (Joel Laufenberg); great grandchildren, Logan Fleming (Jean), Aidan Laufenberg, Declan Laufenberg, Delaney Laufenberg, Charlotte Futrell, Cooper Fleming; niece, Marguerite Russold and her children, Julia and Freddie.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Leo Rice and daughters, Monica Cunard, Mary Rice and Deborah Rice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2021at St. James Catholic Church.  A private burial will follow.

We wish to thank the staff and caregivers at Buckingham South for their kindness and care during her stay there, and many thanks to Arcadia Hospice. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Rice to the ALS Association, 1300 Wilson Blvd, Suite 600, Arlington, VA 22209 (donate.als.org) or St. James Catholic School, 8412 Whitefield Ave., Savannah, GA  31406.
