October 11, 1949 - December 11, 2021

Frank Butler Ouzts, III

Frank B. Ouzts, III, 72, died Saturday, December 11, 2021.

Frank was born in Augusta, GA in the fall of 1949 to the late Virginia Pierson and Frank B. Ouzts, Jr. The family moved to Savannah in 1964. Frank served with the Army National Guard and was a member of Tybee Island American Legion, Post 154. Frank and his wife Judy owned and operated Papa’s BBQ for nearly 50 years. He was a member of Georgia Restaurant Association and Buy Local Savannah.

Frank’s mission since 1972 has been to make hungry people happy. He spent countless hours working and fundraising for Savannah and the Island communities. Frank enjoyed the outdoors with a passion. He loved boating, picnics, family gatherings, the beach, and living at Tybee.

In addition to his parents, Frank was predeceased by a brother, Michael Brent Ouzts.

He leaves behind his wife, Judy; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Susan Ouzts; two nieces, Sara Lindsay (Ian) and Virginia Hallex (Tyler); and two great-nieces, Teagan and Piper Lindsay; and many other friends and family that will dearly miss his smile, laughter, and generosity.

A celebration of Frank’s life will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at Tybee Island American Legion, Post 154 on Tybee.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to Second Harvest Food Bank, 2501 East President Street, Savannah, GA 31404.

Learning of Frank's death today was a complete shock. I have fond memories from his early days at the chicken shack next to the Alamo Plaza, and Three Pigs BBQ in the OMall with my starter hubs Ed & Dickie Q. He was a true entrepreneur who has always known the value of loyal staff and community. His success derived from hard work and dedication, ad well as from seriously good food, prepared properly. There are few so conscientious these days. My sincere sympathy to his beloved wife Judy and to the family. RIP, old friend.

- Cheryl Hunter Clemens, Savannah, Georgia

I was in the Georgia Army National Guard for over 25 years. During that time I had the opportunity to have Frank in my Fire Direction Section in B Battery 2/214th Field Artillery. It was very nice having him in my section. He was smart, nice, hard working and easy to work with. Everyone who had dealings with Frank enjoyed his attitude, cooperation, ability and friendship. We all have suffered a loss in Frank’s untimely death. I have heard others talking about how he helped them or people they knew besides what has been publicized on the internet and in the paper. We were blessed to have him for everything he did to help others by being the wonderful person he was!!

- Randal Robinson, Savannah , Georgia

I will miss Mr. Frank as will so many others. He was a unique person.

- David Avant, Savannah, GA

So sorry for your loss you probably don’t remember me but I was an employee at Tybee marina back when mike and Val owned it. Frank and Judy always took the time to show me how to serve food and importance of food preparation. Having me visit papa’s as well as taking out with they families on boat rides etc. Not only did it teach me work ethics but also the importance of family something that I try to live by today. So what you may of thought insignificant had a dramatic effect on my life and I can honestly say that I’m a much better man today just from spending a couple years knowing Frank and your family. Again so sorry for your loss.

- Rick kendall, Savannah, Ga

My thoughts and prayers are with the Outz family at this sad time. Frank was very special to Toby and me and I know that he and Toby are both in the hands of God. May their memories be eternal. With my deepest sympathy, Irene
