Celebrating the life of

Patricia Winters Halligan

Passed away on November 05, 2020

Patricia Winters Halligan

On Thursday, November 5th, 2020, Patricia (Patty) Winters Halligan passed away peacefully at her home after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Savannah, Georgia on January 28, 1932 to Sarah and Aloysius Winters. Patty grew up on West 39th Street with her parents and 4 brothers in a lively household while being the oldest and the queen.

Always a good student, she attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and St. Vincent’s Academy.  Encouraged by the nuns at school, leaving Savannah, as a young woman, Patty travelled to New Orleans to attend nurses training at Charity Hospital. On her return, she became reacquainted with and married Anthony Joseph Halligan Jr. on August 31, 1957.

Patty and Tony made their home in Atlanta, where they would live for the remainder of their lives. They had three children, Tony, Maureen, and Therese whom they treasured. As a mom, she enjoyed taking her children to their many activities while they all sported around in her Cutlass convertible. She acted as team mother for football, basketball, soccer and cheerleading. As a working mom, she was a role model for both her son and daughters.

She loved taking care of and decorating our home. She had a keen interest in French antiques which contributed to making our home beautiful. As an avid gardener, her yard was admired by neighbors and friends.  Spoiling the family dog Laddy was another of her favorite pastimes.

Patty practiced as a nurse for over 60 years. First as a nurse in Savannah working for several doctors.  She worked as head nurse in the operating rooms of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. After taking some time off, she became the school nurse at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School and at Marist School, both of which her beloved grandson Christopher attended. It was the family joke that she would follow him to college. She devoted her entire nursing career to Catholic institutions that she held close to her heart. However, her favorite job, was being a grandmother to Christopher and Scout and great-grandmother to Rose.

Patty Halligan was, in a word, a go-getter. She was smart, fashionable, always at the right place at the right time. She was loved by her family who will remember her for red hair, silk scarves, sporty cars, and the occasional biting joke.

Patty is preceded in death by her parents Aloysius and Sarah Winters, her cherished husband Tony, and her brother Kirby. She is survived by her son Anthony Joseph Halligan III, his wife Veruschka, daughters Maureen Halligan Ryan & Anne Therese Halligan, grandson Christopher Damian Ryan Jr., his wife Elizabeth and granddaughter Lauren Scout Halligan, great-granddaughter Rose Elizabeth Ryan, her brothers Aloysius (Al), Michael (Mike), and James (Jim), close friend Janet Goethe and a large Irish family.

Greatly missed, she will always live in our hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Savannah on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Vincent’s Academy, 207 E. Liberty Street, Savannah, GA 31401 or The Ronald McDonald House, 4710 Waters Ave., Savannah, GA 31404.
