Walter (Walt) Michael Baczynski, age 73, of Savannah GA, passed away on September 18, 2021. He was born September 8, 1948 in Scranton PA, to Walter and Millie (Mildred) Baczynski (Gajkowski).

Walt attended Penn State University, where he received his BS in chemical engineering. He was commissioned as ESN in the US Navy in 1969 and was Honorably Discharged 1972 as a LTJG. He worked the remainder of his career at Hunt-Wesson Foods, which transferred him to Savannah in 1976.

He was a long-time communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

Walt retained his love of the sea and became an avid sailor. He was heavily involved with the Geechee Sailing Club, the 1996 Olympic sailing event, and the Savannah Sailing Center.  In 1997, he began coaching the Benedictine sailing team and soon after started coaching at St. Vincent’s Academy, which he continued doing until his death.

He remained a lifelong Penn State fan, traveling north each fall with his wife Joanie, to watch football and volleyball and to visit family.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joanie, his parents, Walter and Millie, and his sister, Carolyn (Carrie) Bicket. Surviving are his daughter, Marcia Baczynski of Emeryville CA; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Rachael Baczynski of Saint John’s FL; his grandchildren, PO3 Nicholas Cherry, US Navy, Gabriel and Isabelle; and several cousins.

The Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Monday, October 18, 2021 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. The family will receive family and friends one hour prior.

A memorial scholarship for young sailors is being set up in Walt’s honor.

Dear Baczynski Family - It is with profound regret receiving the news of Walt’s passing. He was a fellow Navy man and sailor and I enjoyed the privilege of working with him at the Savannah Sailing Center. He was dedicated to sailing and mentoring beyond words. Amazing individual - Eight Bell are ringing - Bravo Zulu Sailor. Respectfully- John Mulligan
