Frances Irene Luce

Frances Irene Luce

Click Here to Livestream - Available Thursday at 2:50 p.m.

Frances “Fran” Irene Luce was born in Pineora, GA, daughter to the late Irene Futch (neé Zeigler) and Lemuel Jacob Futch, Sr. She died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at home in Savannah on October 4, 2021.

Fran was predeceased by her husband, James “Jim” Luce, in a marriage spanning more than five decades. She was a Savannah resident for most of her life, though she also spent several years in Baraboo, WI, the hometown of her husband, before they returned to Savannah.

Fran had a full life: she is survived by all five of her children: Brenda Hall (Gainesville, GA), Deborah (Nick) Aracic (Piedmont, CA), Cheryl (Jack) Peacock (Marble, NC), David (Bernadette) Luce (Hilton Head Island, SC), and Dennis (Beverly) Luce (Cypress, TX). During the span of her life, she also had seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Fran volunteered for many years for the Savannah Folk Music Society’s monthly concerts. She loved jazz, and was active in the Coastal Jazz Association, including organizing and volunteering at the Savannah Jazz Festival from 1983-2007. It’s there that she met Jim Gibson, her companion of almost twenty years. She placed God at the center of her life, and was a long-time member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church and Grace Church of the Islands. She enjoyed her summers at Trackrock in the Georgia mountains among the lively community there. She spent her life doing the things she loved best – spending time with people and following her many interests, always adding more of each. She leaves a wide community of people who loved her, enriched by her beauty, energy, and enthusiasm.

Graveside service will be held at 3:00pm on October 7, 2021 in the Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park, 1600 Wheaton Street, Savannah, GA, 31404 with Pastor J.C. Cunningham officiating. The service may be viewed livestream by visiting www.foxandweeks.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Fran's memory to Grace Church of the Islands, 6901 Concord Road, Savannah, GA 31410.

It was such a privilege and a blessing to get to know Fran. She never saw me without sharing her strong faith and love of family. She was also always such a beautiful person, never failing to build you up and sharing her Christian love, kindness and joy with you. I will surely miss her. You are all in my prayers, family and Jim truly as well.

My son Derek Medsker told me one of the family had found his name in Fran's address book and called and told him Fran had passed. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. I grew up next door to Fran and her family. I am Paula Adams the oldest daughter of Charlie H. Adams, Sr. who lived next door until his passing in 2014. Fran was always a good neighbor who was a positive influence on those around her. I have fond memories of her as I grew up. Mrs. Luce was like a second mother to me as I grew up with Cheryl and spent every moment I could with the Luce family. Her finesse and eloquent way of guiding her children are unsurpassed. Mrs. Luce instilled a strong work ethic and her love for God into her children and me. I am eternally grateful!

Fran was one of the most precious and energetic people I've ever known. And, loyal! She was a customer who became a dear friend, and I looked forward to working with, and spending time with her every Savannah Jazz Festival season. Over the years, we put out some great looking t-shirts together--Fun times! Heaven has surely welcomed a saint Home. Praying peace over her family and all who knew and loved her.
