Leslie Hefner Davis

Leslie Hefner Davis died September 24.  Leslie was born November 3, 1961 in Hickory, NC.  She grew up in Greenville, SC, and lived most of her adult life in Savannah, GA.  She graduated from Eastside High School, from The College of Charleston, and received her Masters of Education from Cambridge University.  Leslie taught elementary school in Savannah/Chatham County for 28 years.  She had returned to teaching this year after previously retiring.

Leslie was a dedicated mother of two and an entire community. She worked tirelessly at making sure everyone around her had everything they needed and more. She saw strangers in no one, and poured her graciousness, selflessness, and kindness all over. A true angel sent to us to shine her light on you and through you to shine onto others.

It is with great sadness that I learned about the passing of my cousin, Leslie. She was always kind and considerate to my family - sending cards at the birth of my children and the loss of my loved ones - I kept them all. I know she will be greatly missed by many. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

Leslie had a heart of gold. She would be the first to help someone. I treasured her as a staff member because of her willingness to do for others. She was a devoted teacher, friend and mother. Leslie adored her sons. She will be missed terribly by all who knew her.

- Freida porzio, Ringgold, GA

The news of Leslie passing makes me so very sad. She was a kind and loving person. I so enjoyed her company during high school and had recently spoken with her. She sketched a pencil drawing, in high school, of me playing football. I treasured that thoughtful gift which has somehow vanished. Leslie was so talented in many ways. Please accept the Brock’s most sincere condolences. We are praying for y’all and holding you close to our hearts. Chip Brock

- Chip Brock, Clemmons, NC

My first year at Gould Elementary, Leslie made me feel welcomed. Every morning she made cheerful conversation with me as I led my students to class. Her students were always having a great time as I passed her room. Before I retired she was substituting at Gould. I know she will be missed but not forgotten by her former students and staff. Praying for her family.

This news breaks my heart. Leslie was a caring, compassionate, forgiving, and loving person. She was one of a kind, an amazing athlete and a fun person! We met in fifth grade, were teammates, classmates, and worked together at our after school job at Mr. Gatti’s! She set the bar high and inspired me to keep working hard. She stood at my wedding and our kids played together at my dad’s house when I visited Savannah. I am a better person because of knowing her. Heartfelt condolences to her students, coworkers, sons, brother, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, and parents. Mr. and Mrs. Hefner, thank you for raising this remarkable person. Soar high, Leslie!

- Lynne Guest Wynn, New Market, MD

My brother Ian, so sorry for your loss.

- Jessica Davis, Savannah, GA

My deepest sympathy goes out to all of Leslie’s family in this most difficult time. Please know that she loved you ALL very much, and spoke of you often. I taught with her for five years before she retired and we became fast friends, enjoying some fun times and lifting each other up through challenging times. She was always kind to her students, her “doodlebugs”, and helpful to her colleagues. She loved animals, and I still have my fluffy orange kitty from one of her litters. Her energy and laughter will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I’m deeply sorry to hear of Leslie’s passing. Although many years have passed since we lived in Foxcroft, the childhood memories live on. Knowing the Hefner’s and being friends with Cliff, Leslie and other children in those days made our childhood very special. I have walked through Foxcroft regularly for almost 50 years. It is a treasure of happy, free days. Leslie’s memory, the kindness your family showed us all growing up, will never be forgotten.

- David Renegar, Greenville, SC

I am in utter disbelief! My mouth hit the floor when I heard of this tragic devastating news. My friend. Where to begin! OK..I’ll tell of how we met..just like you always did whenever you introduced me to someone! We met through our “bad a$$ kids” but quickly became friends of our own! And I’m so very thankful we did! If it wasn’t for our “bad a$$ kids” we probably would’ve never crossed paths! You were always so loving to me and my family! You truly loved us and were ALWAYS there for us, day or night, rain or shine..one call and you were there. You would’ve given me the shirt of your back and if I’m being honest, I’m sure you probably did once or twice over the years! Ty my friend. For being my friend. My family!! We didn’t always see eye to eye and it cost us our friendship for 2 years TOO LONG but God brought us back together this year! I literally spent the month of September with you! I can’t believe you’re gone! I just saw you! I have a potted plant you lent me for decoration..so glad you didn’t get it back..I will try my darndest to keep it alive so that I can keep a piece of you with me! I love you so much and am so grateful to have known you! You truly were a big part of my life and my kids lives! You didn’t live an easy life! You had many heart breaks! You didn’t deserve any of it! You deserved so much more. And now my friend you will have it! You’re with God soaring high and free of all your troubles and worries! I know you’re at peace! Say hey to my dad would ja?

- Niki Meyers , Richmond Hill, GA

She was grateful to have parents like you guys and she told me all the time!

- Niki, Richmond Hill, Georgia

Ian, I’m glad you got to have that ride with your mom! She enjoyed every minute of it and even the little hiccup after you all got home (the forgotten treasure lol)! She was always so proud of you and your success, bragged every chance she got! And last BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST..Jared, BJ, beegy squeegee oh how your mom loved you! Oh man! She would’ve given you the world if she could have! She was sooooo beyond excited she got to see you a few weeks ago! Raved about how good you looked with your little haircut! It truly was a great visit she cherished. I pray you find God and peace in this time cause Lord knows you’re going to need Him to see you through this. I pray you become the man your mom always knew you would be! Sore high my beloved friend I miss you dearly already. I love you all and God bless

- Niki, Richmond Hill, Georgia

Leslie and I have been dear friends for about 24 years. We met through teaching second grade together and stayed close for years afterwards. Leslie had a light like so few people have. Always upbeat and happy even in hard times. As a teacher, she was crazy and fun while still being strict but especially caring! After school she would drive kids home that didn’t have rides. She would cry at award ceremonies because giving out their awards touched her so much. She worked so hard to be everything her students needed and her students all adored her. As a parent, her two boys meant the world to her!! She was athletic and perfect to be a boy mama! Always doing things outside with them when they were little. The nicknames and the love she had for Ian and Jared those boys never needed to question. She would do anything at anytime for either of them. The unconditional love and support she gave to each of them was unwavering. They were her whole heart! As a friend/neighbor she was an Angel. Running errands for elderly neighbors, keeping friends children, buying things or supporting anyone at anytime. Putting others before herself was who she was. My whole family loved her dearly, will never forget her spirit and will miss her daily.

- Carie Kuhn , Savannah, Ga

I met Leslie several years ago when she started working at Gould Elementary. What I loved about her is that she was spunky, a straight shooter, willing to help any and EVERY time!! She lovingly called me B( short for Baker) and great sense of humor. No worries anymore Davis, no stress, God said come home my child. I’m surely gonna MISS YOU!! I’ll live off the memories, and knowing you’re at rest now!! Love you my forever friend.

My friendship started with Leslie when she taught with my daughter, Carie Phillips Kuhn, at Georgetown Elementary. I knew the minute I met her, we would be friends. Carie introduced me as “My Mama”. Leslie called me “Carie’s Mama”, “Mama”, Mama Sue, and later “Susie Q”. She had nicknames for everyone in her life! She was a friend to everyone she met and helped them in every way she could. She was at the hospital the day my granddaughter was born. She helped Carie’s family move many times. She even helped me clean out my garage!! Most recently she has help take care of Ralph, Carie’s son/my grandson. He loved her. She took him on walks, swimming, and did whatever he wanted her to do. She called him “Ralphie”.
